U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
Crochet hook for attaching fringe

This isn't quite the same pattern, but it is a scarf done in shadow knitting. It might give you some idea of the yardage and needle requirements.

I got sidetracked and took long enough to post my answer and Lawmar had exactly what you needed. That's interesting stuff. Sounds tedious, though. Have you done this, Lawmar?

No, I haven't done this yet. Looks too tedious and hard for me. Hee hee. Lots of stripes and color changes. I just happen to have the book which I quite like.

Has anyone tried the alien scarf? Any tips as to what not to do? Looks a little complicated but I'll give it a try.
