Picking up stitches???

OK, well I'm starting my second knitting project and it will be another felted bag because I so much enjoyed my first. I can visualize all the instructions except for the picking up stitches part. I start by making a rectangle, 39sts wide x 34 rows, using circular needles-- but just back and forth like regular knitting and all garter stitch. This is the bottom of the bag. Now I have to start picking up stitches on 3 of the sides, first 16 along the left edge, then 39 on the CO edge, and finally another 16 on the rem side to get a total of 110 sts. This will begin the bag sides--knitted in the round. I'm having a difficult time visualing how picking up the stitches goes, and I would sure appreciate any guidance any of you could provide!

Deb :-)
