We loved Mendocino when we were there in June of 2009. Charming & walkable. We stayed here:
Blair House and found it just fine.

We also liked Calistoga a lot. Easy access to the wineries & the town itself is interesting too. We just went to the visitors bureau, picked up some b&b brochures & started calling for the best rates. At that time, tourism was way down so it was easy to bargain for a discount.

Another suggestion: the Benbow Inn in Garberville (Avenue of the Giants area) is a fabulous place to stay -- historic, beautiful. Not cheap, but we stayed in one of their less expensive petite queen rooms and were delighted. I'd love to go back! Link below.
