Question about chenille yarn fringe

I'm crocheting a poncho (Bernat Cool Crochet Poncho) using Caron "Jewel Box," a chenille-type yarn with a colored thread twisted around it.

The pattern calls for a 3-inch fringe on the lower edge of the poncho.

Will the Jewel Box yarn make a good fringe or will it fray and look ratty? To my inexperienced eyes, the colored thread seems to want to separate from the chenille. Also, the Jewel Box yarn is very light weight and I'm wondering if it will hang nicely as a fringe.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to make an edging for this poncho? Suggestions for other techniques for making a fringe?
