What do you mean by 'shawl collar'?

If you dont know what a shawl collar is, then its pointless to ask me, since I need instructions from someone who knows. Since it is too hard to describe in words anyway, look one up in a sewing pattern book, or ask someone at a clothing store, or just ask anyone to show you one. Meanwhile I have found my answer by jumping into the project and taking my chances to see what happens. I will crochet the back then attach the 2 front pieces without adding any contour to the front neck openings. Then fasten off. I will begin again to form the collar by reattaching at front bottom opening edge. Crochet several rows all the way back and forth along the front opening, across the back of the neck and down the other side until the collar is about 3 inches wide. Fasten off and it's a shawl collar.

Quirkpod, I thought I knew what a shawl collar was, but the only pattern I could find didn't portray what I was thinking. I will attach the link anyway. From what you just posted, I think you are thinking about the same type of collar I am. I would probably do the same as what you are thinking, except that I might do single crochet as you up the front of the sweater, and then closer to the neckline do some hdc, and then dc up and around the back. That would give you a nice spread at the neckline without adding too much border on the front. Does that make any sense to you?

Ironkit - sorry if I sounded a bit snippy. After much thought, I can describe a shawl collar as being a notched lapel collar without the notches. Moreover it can extend the entire length to the hem of the front opening edge of the garment. There, now the whole worldwide web knows what a shawl collar is, thanks to your Q. I guess that's what we are all here for. Sorry I was short with you.
