Back again and starting over

I posted a few layouts awhile back but we had to postpone the remodel for several reasons. Now we're getting back into planning again. We never really truly fell in love with any of the designs given to us by various cabinet companies and our budget/priorities have changed, so we're strongly considering IKEA Lidingo for our Craftsman home.

I know that you guys are such a fantastic resource and I wanted to post a "blank canvas" because I keep going back to the same old designs whenever I sit down to consider the layout. I need fresh eyes to look at this space.

What I'm posting here is as stripped down as it can get. We are combining two rooms which is why there is a strange extra wall in the northeast part of the new kitchen to represent that the two rooms are not the same length (north/south). A built-in buffet from the dining room causes the 12"x72" bump into the west wall. We will install a door somewhere on the east wall to lead outside. I removed the existing door and an existing window to give the most flexibility.

Our current range is electric and we will be staying with that. There are no other restrictions for plumbing or heating.

Must haves:

-eat in kitchen, don't want island as only seating

-lots of storage, preferably some tall storage for brooms, mops, etc. We are removing 2 closets in the remodel so we need to recoup some of that space.

-lots of cabinets for small appliances and cookware; we have a lot

-as much uninterrupted counterspace as possible

-stacked cabinets to 9" ceiling with some crown moulding

-room for 2 to cook at a time

Would likes:

-island or peninsula, *preferably* without a major workstation, but we can be flexible

Would be cool, but aren't necessary:

-wall oven/micro

-range and extractor hood

Don't wants:

-island as only seating

-"open" uppers or shelves, cabinets only (I like things neatly stowed away)

We are DINKs (for now) hoping to start a family. We cook quite a bit and would cook more in a bigger kitchen. We want a family-friendly hub of the house type of kitchen that is also very usable.

Thank you so much.

Gah! All I've got at the house is Linux, so I can't look at the IKEA link. Is it pretty much the same as the picture you posted?

Actually one of the old designs and seeing what you don't want is a good starting point.

cabinfo - yes, the pic posted is exactly from what I linked.

palimpsest - I can dig them up; I was worried posting them might "taint" the blank slate idea. One place basically kept the same footprint, one didn't have enough uppers, one had the sink in the island which might be what we need to do but we wanted to keep one spot of open counter space.

Lots of storage, lots of counters, maybe too crowded? For some reason the 2D version doesn't show the table and chairs

Or turn the entire thing around. We'll need some filler to get the sink centered under the window and I couldn't find the stacks I wanted on the IKEA planner but you get the idea. Again, the 2D doesn't show the dining table. Link below.

If you go with an island, I'd swap cab #5 with cab #2. Your sink would then be closer to your fridge and stove.
I like the bottom choice better, but you have lost the corner base cab. I think you need to rearrange in order to have that space usable.

dianalo - do you mean the upper left corner? We wouldn't have a corner cabinet because of the shallower cabinets in the 48" stretch to make it flush with the 12" bump-out.

In the top one is that the fridge and the stove right next to each other? Try the fridge where one of the pantry cupboards is.

palimpsest - that doesn't look right, does it? Unfortunately with the wall bumpout, putting something as deep as the fridge or even a full depth base cabinet will cause it to jut out by 12", hence the shallow cabinets on that wall in the top design. Right now our sink and DW are along that wall and DH hates the "hip killer" created by the 12" difference.

Here's the "hip killer" now (under microwave). What you see is the extent of our kitchen now, so you can see why we're looking forward to a remodel!

Not that you would need all the island seating...sounds like you need storage more. The white rectangle next to the frig is supposed to be pullout.

houseful - I do like the banquette idea. It would give it a custom feel and fit in with our craftsman home.

Here's my latest mock-up. I put a blind corner upper, took out some of the cabs around the extractor hood and decided that a wall oven/micro is just too expensive so this is a regular range and a cabinet micro design. I also made a buffet with some cabinets. Not sure if I like it or not.
