Glitter, I understand what you are saying about the gift giving. It's difficult to figure out what to give people because most people I know have everything they need or want. But...when you make something for someone, it says so much more than a trip to the mall. It is flattering to know someone made something for you personally. It says, "I like you."

That shawl is beautiful. It says beginner, but row 2 is beyond me so I must be below beginner. LOL! Why not get some of that trellis yarn and see if you like knitting with it.

Hi, Socks! I picked up 3 skeins of trellis yarn today at Michaels (only allowed to use one 40% off coupon, so I'll go back tomorrow for other stuff;-). The needles are huge, so I don't know how I'm going to handle them and that flimsy 'ribbon' yarn.

As for row 2, it's worded weirdly. I think it would be better worded to say: knit into the front and the back of the first stitch, K1, knit into the front and back of the last stitch. (the part about knitting until the last stitch when there are only 3 stitches on the needle is just plain silly;-) It's the same method as making those granny dishcloths.

Unfortunately our DD saw the yarn and I happened to mention that I considered knitting one of those skinny scarves for her out of it. Guess what my next project is? hah! The pattern for that, if you need it, is also on the Lion Brand site, Skinny Scarf. She loved the brown/beige blend I chose for the shawl. I think I'm going to see enough of that stuff until Christmas!!

Well, let us know how you like knitting with a long, little ladder! I'm sure you'll be fine; it will just be different.
One thing about the needles, you may get through your projects quickly.

That must be the Quick Knit Scarf you mentioned from Lion Brand. Very cute also. I have one Michaels coupon left and might try it if I can find time to pick up the yarn. I do understand "knit every row."

Glitter, I think they worded the row 2 directions that way because they then tell you to repeat row 1 & 2, and each time you get to row 2, there will be more stitches. It's a very pretty shawl, and should knit up quickly!

For years I've knocked myself out making piles of Christmas gifts for friends and family - the list got longer every year. This year I said I'm not doing that anymore, and DH and I are going to make donations to a few favorite charities in our friends' and family members' names. Maybe I will finally have time to make some projects for me! :)

Yes, I'll bet it gets difficult to keep up with hand-made Christmas gifts if you're from a large family! I guess I'm lucky that way, at least, a small family, so that makes things easier. I just got tired of buying 'stuff' and getting 'stuff' neither families needed, even tho the gifts were very nice, still....why? This may turn the tide a little, I hope. I'd like to just buy for my neice and have them buy for our DD, instead of buying for my brother and his wife and vis-versa, but I haven't broached that subject, yet.

I started knitting it, but I have to pick up a different colour needles...the ones I have are too dark for the brown/beige trellis yarn, and it's difficult to knit without getting tangled sometimes into the wrong stitch! But the knitting is going well otherwise...I'm using 13mm needles and 16 stitches for that long scarf, and can't imagine using 15mm! Like I said...knitting thread with logs! haha! But yes...should go quickly!!

Hey there, Sheila Kay here. a newbie, I have just knitted 2 long scraves for gifts. and now cross-stitching a angel bookmark for a gift. I knitted a long Cape type of a wrap. Last March out of suede yarn; using round knitting kneedles. It turned out really well. I don't have to many to buy for. WE had so many niesces and nephews we just had to give that up!! We have a large family and it is just impossible to give/make gifts for everyone. Thank goodness we stopped that years ago. I give Christmas gifts to my children, grandchildren, mother and husband. But we make very little of Christmas gifts. After all, we know that's not what Christmas is all about. But I believe that when you love and care for people, family or not, it actually means more to them to get an unexpected gift. So, all year long, I just keep knitting and crocheting and giving, and they are pleasantly surprised.

It looks like it'll be a very beautiful gift. I'm not familiar with this Lion brand yarn, but ladder yarns are tricky. They're slippery and it's easy to accidentally knit in between the ladder's 2 strands. If you find the size 19 straight needles too unwieldy, consider getting bamboo circulars (24 inch long and up). They'll grip the yarn and distribute the weight of your knitting better. Good luck!

I picked up some cheap ladder yarn at Target - awful to knit with but beautiful to look at. It says you can get one of those skinny scarves from a $1 ball.

I made a scarf from the trellis yarn. Started it 2-3 times before I got the hang of it. Used sz. 17 needles. It looks pretty, but I still have to do the fringe. I hope it doesn't stretch out real skinny when worn. It might.

Thrilled to see a thread on Trellis Yarn, just started this shawl over the week-end, inspired by the shawl a friend knitted and was wearing at a luncheon. She has completed one in every color.
It is tricky getting started, I've made three attempts; now its going pretty good, but just discovered a dropped stitch!!
threejsmom thanks for the suggestion to change to circular needles, going to pick up them up today, and also tackle the dropped stitch.

Yucky yarn. I had to start that skinny scarf three times before I got to the point where I didn't drop a stitch or knit in between the trellisissss! It sure looks terrible for the first inch or so...but keep on keepin' on, and it gets better. 'Course you're going to need bright lights to deal with that yarn!!

I have made several of those triangular shawls. They take very little time and turn out great. Every one that recieved one just loved them. I found that it worked easier for me to knit the shawl on circular needles rather than trying to work with the ladder yarn all bunched up on the straight needle the further along you get. Also need to watch out that you do not knit into the middle of the ladder.

Occasions? Honey you could wear that if you wanted to. Especially since shawls are so in style ..... wear it with jeans or what ever else you want. With a plain shirt (white etc. NO PRINTS WITH THAT SHAWL).... Long sleeve type tee or tanks are nice in the summer. Try it. :)
