Who here has a nook? (e-reader)

A couple of months ago I knocked my netbook (mini laptop) off a table. Have been trying to decide what/if to replace it. We have a desktop system and a full-size laptop. I loved my netbook because it was so portable. I used it mainly to surf, email, etc. I've thought about getting an ipad, but recently have been looking at a nook. I'd get the color version w/wi-fi. I'm hoping to make more time for reading, but many times that only happens when we are traveling, camping, etc.

I'm thinking the nook would serve my needs, plus I love the size. Also, it's about half what an ipad would be, less too than another netbook.

Anyone have one? Comments?

Thanks!!

I have the Kindle and I love it, only 114.00 at Amazon.

My DIL has the Nook and she loves it!

There are rumors that Amazon will be putting out a touch screen pad soon so if you are interested, it is possibly worth it to wait a little while. I use my i-pod touch for surfing and e-mail most of the time. It also has an app to use as a Kindle but fully intend to get my own Kindle at a later time but really view the Kindle as a reader, not a multipurpose device. DS has a Kindle and it is wonderful and we intend to get a refurbished one for his sister soon. I love actual books but bookshelves are expensive and take up a lot of space.

After trying out the Kindle and an early Nook, I found that I'm happiest using my iPod Touch. It's smaller, it's backlit and I can play music at the same time. I gave my Nook to my mother. About a year later, she got an iPhone and the Nook is now gathering dust.

hmmm, I have an Iphone. You can get a kindle app, but that's too small. You can also play music on the Nook - at least that's what it says on the website. I'm going to B&N and at least look at it. The Nook is color vs the Kindle which is not. I'd also get the wi-fi.

Thanks tish for the info on the pad. Not sure what I want! Worth some checking out.

My son just bought a Dell Duo. The primary reason was to access the library books at no cost. It is wireless and has all the "stuff" wanted that exists on others. No clue what all of it is, he has had his nose in it forever reading.

DH has a nook and loves it. He is a big reader, reads every day at lunch and before bed. I'm more of a web surfer. So rather than getting an e-reader I got an iPad (which I can also use for work so can write it off). If you mainly read, the ereaders are best. The e ink is amazing. But they aren't backlit so you need a reading light. If you want to surf, look into the tablets.

Jakabedy - does your dh have the color nook with wi-fi? It IS backlit (at least that's what the website says). Hope to go to B&N in the next few days and check them out. I thought it would be neat to have one where I could read and surf. There are also apps for the nook, but don't know that I would use those. Thanks for the info!!

I just bought the newer version b&w Nook. I agonized for a few days about the color with wifi or the b&W but since I don't download music, or play games, and since I want it just for reading books the b&w is a better option for me. You don't need a reading light with the color version but it can also be more tiring on your eyes since it's like staring at a computer screen for a long time.

I can download library books for free and that was very important to me. I don't like to buy many books. I don't think Kindle has that ability yet but I'm sure it will soon.

Here are some comments I just sent to 2 friends who are also new Nook users:

You have to turn it completely off, like a cell phone, on planes during take off & landing. Advantage: real book

It is light. But unlike a book, the weight always stays in the right hand. Advantage: neither one, it's just something I noticed

There is some slight not-really glare (like you get on a computer screen) but reflection of light. Advantage: real book

I can look up words in the dictionary from the screen & pop right back. I love this! Advantage: Nook

I will be more concerned about leaving the Nook on a beach chair unattended versus leaving a book. But I don't like leaving cell phones & wallets unattended either so it's not as though fear of losing my Nook will chain me to my beach chair. OTOH, I can easily walk away with my phone & wallet but it will be awkward to stroll along carrying my Nook. I'll look nutty. Or nuttier than normal. Or nookier.

Tossing it on the floor at night as I turn off the light. Advantage: real book, but I shouldn't be doing that with library books either.

You might not think so, based on the above, but I do like my Nook. I don't think I'll ever read all my stuff that way. It's so much easier to carry than the multiple books I need when I travel, I'll probably only use it then.

I have had the color nook since July, but sad to say, it is still in the box! I haven't had a minute these last couple of months to even try to read. Hopefully, in the next couple of days, I will get it out and set up to read!

I've had the color nook for about a year now and I love it. I use it to surf the internet, check FB, check my email acct., visit these forums, etc. I love that I can use it at night while hubby sleeps without disturbing him with a light. I subscribe to a couple of magazines, great for when I'm getting a pedi and just want a quick read. It has Pandora radio - Love it! and I also enjoy some of the apps. I also bought the B&W e-ink version for out at the pool in the summer just for reading. B&N offers a free nookbook every Friday, too! I'm very happy with the color Nook.

    jane -

My DH has the B&W nook, the original version, with wifi. He's a reader of novels and biographies, so no real need for the color. He played with a color one at the store the other day, but he didn't see any reason to upgrade based on his typical usage.

    Jane? LOL

Thanks guys for sharing all this info!!! Rachel - I think I would use it just like you - when I'm out and about - in place of my regular laptop, etc. Would be nice for traveling. I like the idea of the magazines (I'm a magazine junkie LOL). Also like the idea of accessing the library. By coincidence, I heard this morning on our local news that Kindle readers can access libraries in certain cities now. The library in the big city is accessible, not sure about my rural one. From my research, the nook outweight the kindle.

Thanks again for all your help/suggestions, etc.!!!

You can turn a Nook into an android tablet. Some people root their Nooks to accomplish this, but that voids the warranty. Instead, you can buy or build a micro-SD card that will allow you to run the Nook as a Nook or a tablet, and won't void your warranty. The ready to go cards vary dramatically in pricing, and building a card costs next to nothing.

My husband assures me that anyone could follow the directions for building a card (and if you google, there are many out there), but if it were just me I would spring for the ready to go card. I'm attaching an article with comments for any who are interested.

Here is a link that might be useful: Nook=Tablet Article

Riosamba I saw that article!! Didn't see where you could do it without voiding the warranty. Thanks!! I'll let you guys know.

Tina! I don't know where I got Jane! Clearly insanity has set in and cannot be dissuaded from its course.

HAHAHA Jakabedy! You crack me up.

Ok guys and gals, just got back from Barnes and Noble. Bought the color Nook w/wi-fi and a pink leather case!! I'm set!

Thanks again for all the advice.

The warranty remains because your Nook stays just the same- all the extras are running from the card. My husband explained this in more technical terms, but that is what I retained! Enjoy your Nook! The cover sounds very cute!

I was tempted to buy the color Nook and root it as riosamba described before a trip to Europe. I already have a Kindle and love reading on it, but thought that the Nook would be handy for email, surfing etc. I ended up not buying a new device, and having my Kindle with me with FREE world wide 3G service actually really saved me. I needed to get out some emails from the Copenhagen airport, and the public access computer terminals were very expenisve, as was buying online time to use on my smart phone. I was able to use the brower on my Kindle to access my email. It was a bit slow, but it did the job. For reading books I think that the e-ink displays on the Kindle and the B&W Nook are much easier on the eyes, and you can read them outside in sunlight. I'm sure that eventually someone will come out with a color touch pad e-ink tablet with a backlight that can be turned on or off.

tina, I purchased the turquoise case!

I have both the B&W Nook and the Color Nook. I gave my B&W one to a friend to use, but I do miss it when reading at the beach. Other than that, I don't miss it at all.

I love my color Nook. I love that I don't need a reading light and don't find it makes my eyes tired. I love getting my email on my nook and I love checking out library books. I only buy books occasionally.

I love being able to lie on my side and I can just prop my Nook up on a pillow. I like that I can take 10 books with me on vacation and they all fit right in my purse! :-)

I have to admit that I was a real anti e-reader person. My DH bought my first one as a birthday gift because he couldn't think of anything else to get me. I reluctantly agreed to try it out but had every intention of returning it. I loved my paper books - the feel of them, smell etc.

Now, I cannot fathom reading on anything but my Nook. LOVE IT!!

I have both a kindle and a nook color. I would buy the kindle over the nook any day of the week if you want it for reading books only. It's cheaper for one thing. It is also lighter and I find it more comfortable to hold. You can read outside with it and see it in bright sunlight which you cannot with the nook color. I also prefer the buttons to turn the pages on the kindle rather than having to touch the screen on the nook. I like my nook for occasional web browsing and it's OK to read on, but I don't ever use my nook to read. I read on the kindle every day and I love love love it and would never go back to real books.

Sorry -- I want my book to have volume and pages to turn. Will never start reading books over an electronic device -- gives me a headache.

annie, have you tried a Kindle? The e-ink is really easy on the eyes, and you can change the type size and spacing. My son and I are both recent Kindle converts and used to feel the same way you do. Now we both love reading on our Kindles. In fact, I have to choose a book for my book club next month, and thought that I would pick one that my daughter gave me in hardback last year that I haven't read yet. The person who chooses for our club usually purchases all the necessary books and is repaid by the members. I am tempted to sell my hard cover book (for the paperback price), so that I can buy it for my Kindle instead.

I,m posting from my nook! On Friday you get a free download, so i downloaded the book to my library. I set up my email, chose some stations on Pandora and looked at some apps. LOVE how portable it is!
