want to crochet

I am new here and want to thank you in advance. Please recommend a book with illustrations and detailed instructions of basic stitches that can help me learn to crochet. My mother and all my aunts were talented knitters and crocheters. Despite their patient instruction, i never got the knack. I can chain stitch but that is it. I am hoping that I catch on now with some patience of my own and a good instructional tool.

Hi, I have a book called Crocheting School A Complete Course. It is a hardback book with instructions and pictures in color that has helped me.
It is put out by Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. New York 2002.
I think there are videos on YouTube that you can watch for free. They can be stopped at any time and can be watched over and over. craftsy.com has tutorials that are free. I hope that helps a little. Karan

Karan, Thank you. I put the book you suggested on hold at my public library. It should be available soon. If it works for me, I will order a second hand copy from Amazon. Meanwhile, I plan to view the tutorials you mentioned. Hopefully, I will finally get beyond the chain stitch.

Karan mentioned UTube. I think that is an excellent suggestion. There are so many videos to choose from and it is much easier to learn if you actually see someone go through the motions as opposed to looking at a few photos. I wish you the best!

If you get the create channel on cable, they have a program called knit and crochet now and they go throughs some pretty basic steps and patterns for both knit and crochet.

I Googled How to crochet videos and got pages worth. Try several of the links. Some are probably better than others and I'm sure you will be able to find one that demonstrates/explains the instructions in a way best for you.

The best thing about using these videos, is that you can start, pause, and replay over and over again while you are actually holding the hook and yarn and make what is in your hands look like the photos.

I just couldn't get the crocodile stitch from instructions (and I have been crocheting for many years) until I was able to run/pause/run/pause/run/pause over and over again. Finally it clicked in my head and I was able to do it.

I used youtube videos from the crochet geek since she shows left and right handed and this book because it had left and right handed illustrations which are great. Mary
