Try washing it with a fabric softener. That should soften it up quite a bit.

I think Patons has a camo color as well now.

Shetland Chunky is kind of - in Everglades Varigated.

I think Caron does as well. I know I've seen other camo yarns besides Red Heart, but I can't find them right now!

I always wash any Red Heart yarn gift and use fabric softener in the RINSE cycle. Makes a huge difference. I suspect fabric softener sheets in the dryer will not work as well.

I made DS an afghan, hat and scraf out of RH Camo and they've both been washed more than once and he doesn't complain about them being scratchy. In fact, he had the scarf on this morning when he left for school. :)

I will definitely wash it with fabric softener, but I won't buy it again. I don't even like working with it, feels like rope or something....but as I keep telling myself, I am in the "research and developement" phase of my crocheting, so every thing I do, I make notes on, take pictures and learn something from! :-)
