I make the Betsy Ross flag afghan. It has 13 stars in a circle. I found the star works out ok, but I have to make it with a smaller hook, size E if I recall correctly. Use worsted weight yarn. Leaving a long tail, chain 5 and join with a slip stitch. Make 15 sc in the circle and join to first sc with a slip stitch. Chain 5. SC in the second chain from the hook; hdc in the next chain, dc in the next chain and trc in the last chain. One point made. Skip two sc and sc in the 3rd sc. Make 5 chains and repeat to make the next star point. Do this for 5 star points. Leave a long tail. I like to take the long tails and stitch some of the stitches together in the star point so that there are not so many gaps. I whip stitch the triple crochet to the center single crochets. I use the other end to weave through that first circle of sc and pull it tight to make the hole in the center less noticeable. I prefer the bumpy "wrong side" for the best look.
