Finishing off a baby blanket

I made a baby blanket of 6" squares, different pastels and patterns. Sewing the squares together with a needle did not look good, so I crocheted them, creating ridges on the back. I don't like the look of the ridges and was thinking of sewing a piece of flannel on the back to finish it off a little better. I also want to crochet a shell stitch around the edge, so would I do this before or after the flannel? Anyone ever done anything like this?

If I get the flannel on and an edge crocheted, maybe I could then tie it together where the 6" squares meet, like a quilt, so the two parts don't flap? Does this just sound like a mess?

This is not a gift, so it's not a crisis if it doesn't look as good as I'd like. But I would like to fix it up a bit if possible.
