You might like Lion Brand's Wool Ease, part acrylic and part wool. I just went and looked at the socks I made from it, and they have pilled a little, I must tell you. I also made a small blanket from Wool Ease, and it has not pilled. Wool Ease has a really nice look to it, especially the heathers.

I crocheted an afghan for my brother in Plymouth Encore yarn, and would do it again. I've also knit hats with it.
As far as felting and shrinkage goes, it's a wool/acrylic blend, that's very machine-washable and -dryable, and I haven't seen it pill much.

I'm very glad to hear your good report about Plymouth Encore, Wendy, I've bought some skeins of it on ebay. They haven't arrived yet, but I saw some good reviews of it online and thought it would definitely be one I want to try.

I've seen it at my yarn shop, and it looks quite nice and comes in lots of colors.

I still like 4 ply worsted weight for my afghans they wash up nice and wear well. Caron's Simply Soft is very good and easy to work with.
