Return air bang

We just moved into a new home. When the refrigerated air conditioner blower turns on or off, a loud bang (or a series of bangs) comes from the return air vent. It sounds like the metal ductwork is flexing and making the noise. Any advice as to what is causing this noise and how to get rid of it? Thanks.

You have an unbalanced duct system, or the sheetmetal is too light of a guage. The bang is the duct presuring up. I would imagine the static pressure is too high. Make sure the fan is not set too high of a speed, keep the filter clean. You could have too much pressure from a oversized filter. The return may be too small for the supply side. Get a tech to find the problem.

See if the filter is clogged.
The return duct could be too small or sized big on one side which allows too much flexing.
Does the filter slam against the return grill?
