Kitchen appliances and gadgets...

Do I need an intervention? After reading the food processor thread, I wanted to run out and buy the progressive chopper and Genius Dicer. I think I may have a problem. At least that's what my kids tell me. Take a look.

Hello. My name is Golddust. I am addicted to kitchen stores and have a fully stocked kitchen. I am intimately familiar with almost everything in your photo. I think I could at least duplicate your photo. Do you have a pasta maker? Lol.

That said, I am catering Mom's birthday party dinner next weekend. Dinner for 50 and I don't have to buy anything in order to cook for that many people. The theme for the dinner is "Sunday dinner at Noni's house." Eggplant Parmesan for 50... Yes!

I don't see a french potato ricer, indispensable!!

Where's your toaster? AND bread machine, griddler, ice cream maker and closet full of plastic storage containers????

I have all that you have pictured (minus one handheld mixer) plus those on my list.

I mostly use a chef's knife and cutting board.

I have a French potato ricer. Love it!

These things are just in my chopper/mixer category, I have many, many other types of appliances and gadgets. No ricer though, that'll be next!

I don't have a ricer. I don't have alot of extras really. I am more comfortable with the basics. Then again, while I do cook a good bit and cook from scratch - I do not cook for large groups.

Maddielee - we do not use a toaster. LOL I am partial to toast made in the oven. No bread machine either. I do, however, have the cabinet full of plastics!

Don't worry tho - I have enough addictions without this one! LOL

do you like your parm cheese grater, or do you usually just use a microplane?? (i too have alot of gadgets!)

Most of the time the Microplane.

OMG . . . I've found more kindred spirits! I'm right there with you all! My family and friends know that the coolest gift for me is a gift certificate to Williams-Sonoma or any other store that sells great kitchen gadgets and stuff. DH bought me that very same slicer, although I hardly ever use it. I have most everything else in your pic, though! The same mini food processor. I use that a lot. Don't want or need a hand mixer or potato ricer as I love mashing my potatoes by hand with an old-fashioned potato masher.
LOVE my mezzaluna and wooden bowl to use with it.

DD bought me this great rubber garlic peeler in green. I thought it would be a waste of money, but now LOVE it and use it all the time.

These angled measuring cups are my favs. I use them constantly and have them in every size.

Silicone basting brushes were a godsend. I'll ever go back to the old, constantly shedding ones again!

I use my set of magnetic nesting measuring spoons all the time. I love that the one side of them is made to fit into those narrow spice jars. They stay nested nicely in my prep drawer, too, because they're magnetized.

And, I love my KitchenAid mixer. I call it my little red kitchen Ferrari (LOL).

I've just reread my post here and noticed how many times I've used the word "love". I guess it's obvious how much many of us love our great kitchen gadgets and appliances (LOL)!
OK, my electric pasta maker has been forgotten down in a not much used kitchen cab and now that you've reminded me, I need to get it back out and make some yummy pasta dish for dinner tonight. Thanks for this great thread!

You have too many chopper thingies and not enough knives....and I see no garlic press, nor a potato masher, how can you keep house without a bagel slicer?
That crank handle cheese grater is un necessary, take it to Good Will...and I'll let you take mine too.
I didn't see a gravy separator, nor a pie bird...no cake tester nor trussing pins.
And get rid of the second egg slicer....I didn't see a mushroom brush either.
You don't need an intervention just guidance....and a lot less chopping gadgets and more knives.

I'm relatively new to cooking, but I've never met a gadget that I didn't want to try. Most of the time, I don't need any of my kitchen gadgets except the NicerDicer, my Microplane grater, a meat thermometer and a timer. We mostly eat grilled chicken or fish and fresh vegetables. During the holidays, though, I use pretty much every gadget I own.

Two years ago, I bought a nice set of glass storage containers and donated all of my plastic ware to a couple who were furnishing their first house. I love having an organized set that stacks together in one place, is easily found, doesn't stain and goes in the dishwasher without warping. The only plastic container I have left is my lettuce keeper and if I could find a glass one, I would buy it.

I use my microplane for garlic. Donated bagel slicer and do have a potato masher. I hate mushrooms, so no need for a brush.
I do have lots of knives, a nicer sharpener too, if I could figure out how to use it. I use both egg slicers, one for eggs the other for strawberries. My favorite gadgets of all are my rechargeable salt and pepper grinders. I use them every day, have had them for years and a charge lasts for a couple of months.

What a fun and timely post! I have been going through my kitchen and clearing out-- I'll have a smaller space soon and the truth is, I have a few favorite gadgets and far more that I just don't reach for.

The one thing I absolutely couldnt live without is my Kyocera Kyotop ceramic knife. I have other good knives but this one is perfect for me-- perfect weight, perfect cut. I also *love* my cole and mason electric peppermill. Who knew I'd need a light to pepper my soup.. but I DO! lol In a fit of purging, I sold my top of the line cuisinart in a garage sale. I lament its loss weekly.. but i bet the woman who bought it for $15 is still thrilled. sigh.

I have a kitchenaid mixer-- and this is where I make my bread (usually rye or crusty old world italian). I gave away the two breadmakers I'd received as gifts. I occasionally use my pasta roller and ravioli press. I should give them away but I can't think of melt-in-your-mouth pasta and dream of giving them up.

I do use the immersion blender much more than I expected-- for soups.. ginger muffins.. banana bread. Of course, I wouldnt need it if I hadnt sold my cuisinart!

I recently replaced my waffle maker with the all-clad model-- a splurge for sure but so worth it! Also after many years of making bread without, I bought a pizza stone for my crusty loaves. Now I just need a pizza peel!

I don't have a ricer but have my great great grandmother's potato masher-- basically a wooden club-- but an absolutely charming piece of family history. Oh, and speaking of clubs-- don't know how I lived without my rubber mallet.

So yes, I will be clearing out lots and yet.. I see new purchases in my future!

Lindac - My rotary cheese grater fits so nicely in its niche. Keeps the surrounding gadets from shifting around. Very useful.

i love microplanes and wish i had had at least one during all of my adult years, but i still couldn't do without a garlic press!! i use garlic pretty frequently, so maybe that's why...
i have my grandmother's old (75+yrs??) potato ricer and never use it except on the rare occasion that i make 'potato balls' which i never seem to make as well as my grandmother did...

Judie, your harvest and garden are amazing - I remember those garden pictures!!
I want to know if your family eats all that sauce every year. How many jars each week do you open? Do you give some away?

Judie, I could use your pantry right now. Awesome!

I love my Cutco cheese knife. If I had to pare down to just one knife, I would choose it in a heartbeat. I use it for everything, including cheese.

My name is Julie & I too am a kitchen gadget addict. I have many, many gadgets! I don't have time to name them all now since dinner's on the stove. I do want to mention that garage sales & second hand stores are a great resource for people like us! Lower costs allow for more gadgets.....just in case any of you need more "enabling".

Judie, your pantry stock is amazing! I can tomatoes too, but only 8-9 quarts total for the whole winter since it's just me & my husband. I also can kidney beans, which I find to be much better than store bought. That is a heck of a lot of work you do to can that many jars!!! You must really enjoy doing it.

OK, Judie I have all the items in some form that you have in your picture. This year alone, between garage sales & Amazon, I have aquired the following.
vintage Rival meat slicer, Farberware Open Hearth broiler & rotisserie, West Bend indoor electric grill, Waring Pro hotdog grill, vintage Oster super griddle, Marcato pasta machine set with several attachments, vintage 4.5 qt Crockpot, vintage 1.5 hp meat grinder, rotary spaetzle maker.
A few things I already had before this year: GE 18 qt roaster oven, Nesco 6 qt roaster oven, Nesco dehydrator, Fagor pressure cooker, Presto 16 qt canner, Cuisinart verticle rotisserie, Chef's Choice electric knife sharpener, Villaware food strainer, Chef's Choice SmartKettle, Breadman bread maker...that's most of it!

I shouldn't have opened this post. It's costing me money already! Thank goodness I already have the VitaMix :)

Lol. I have a vitamix circa 1970 ish. Wish it had a see through jar instead of stainless but I am making do because it is still strong as a horse.

Judie, I have probably asked you this before so I apologize!, but what is your tomato sauce recipe using fresh tomatoes?
How would you describe the sauce? Thick? Chunky? Marinara?
I make sauce every year, maybe 12 big jars, but I'm not happy with it. Last year I made it too watery.

    Bumble,
The tomatoes we jar are processed through and electric mill that removes the skin and seeds and leaves a very thick puree. We put a few leaves of basil in the jar and fill it with the tomato sauce, that's it. When I make a sauce I take how every many jars I'll be needing and then I add the other ingredients, evoo, garlic, meat, salt, herbs etc. We also jar some of the tomatoes whole or sliced for dishes that call for pieces. This is what the machine looks like.
