Please Help with Kitchen Cabinet Layout

Hi Experts,

We are doing our kitchen remodel without making any changes to the walls. We have a 70's kitchen and the primary purpose of the remodel is to upgrade the cabinets that are dated and remove the double oven that we have never needed and used, and we are hoping to add counter space that is something that we have missed.

To keep the cost within budget, we are not planning to move the location of the vent and electrical as much as possible.

I have attached a plan (to scale) using the ikea kitchen design tool.

We like the rest of the layout as attached, but the wall A to the left of the drawing is becoming very difficult to balance.

The KD is proposing an asymmetric design with 3 cabinets to the left of the cooktop each around 14", making the center of the cooktop 65 inches from the wall, and the cooktop 49.5" from the doorway.

My alternative proposal would be to move the center of the cooktop to 56" from the door, and have 3 doors on each side of the cooktop. The doors would be thin, like 112/3" to the right of the cooktop, and 12 6/8" to the left of the cooktop.

The door is a raised center panel with a double bead trim, and are 36" long (The ceiling is 8').

Which option would work better.

The current kitchen has a 2 door cabinet to the left of the cooktop 43", and another 2 door cabinet to the right measuring 36", and we had not notices the difference until the KD pointed it out, and even then, we dont seem to mind it that much.

Please share your opinions/thoughts

I much more prefer your plan newbiekr, it gives that line of cabinets a focal point. I think you might want to consider flanking each side with 39" or so. The narrow sized cabinets that you are now questioning seem way to narrow; I'd go for functionality in this situation instead of form, especially since your eye will be drawn to the stove area.

Thank for the suggestion aloha2009, we appreciate.

The cabinet maker is saying that a 39" cabinet will have the shelves that are too long to remain straight over long term use. That's why he wanted a combination of 24 + x.

The other issue is that the left of this wall is the sink wall and a corner lazy susan. That makes the bottom have two 4 inch openings (symmetrically around the oven) that are so narrow that we will have to fit a drawer front vertically, and most likely not be able to use that 10 inches of space :(

    Here is a new proposal

    Top
    16.875 doors, 3" filler, 36" range hood, 3" filler, 16.125 doors

    Bottom
Lazy Susan, 6" spice rack, 30 inch oven, 6 inch spice rack, 2 cabinet doors 16.25"

The doors may become a little wider or narrower if the framing requires it, I am assuming 1/4" for each door.

That makes the center of the range hood around 56, which is almost center of the wall

    What do you think ?

Please keep in mind that the wall to the right opens into a hallway, and the wall to the left has the kitchen sink.

I would put the fillers on the ends of the run, not in the middle.

Think: Filler pullouts! No wasted space! (Assuming you don't need that filler moved to the ends to allow doors & drawers to open).

Are you merely using the Ikea planner or are you buying Ikea cabs also?

For what it's worth, if you use a cooperative custom cab shop, you can make identical doors on uppers but have one cab with a different, wider inside dimension and merely access the extra space sideways from the door, the extra interior space being behind a blank filler panel. Note the far right on this photo.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I can see that palimpsets situation is just like mine where one side is slightly larger.

I am working with a custom cabinet maker, and am using ikea as a tool to visualize the ideas. He is patient and cooperative.

Palimpset, if instead of using the door extension, I put in a narrow glass door as a pullout for that space, how do you think that would look ?

It is deliberate asymmetry, and brings some visual interest. But it can also draw attention to that away from the range hood.

I am meeting with the designers again today afternoon to finalise the plans

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions and ideas
