A Book Recommendation

I was loaned a copy of 'The Ride of Our Lives' by Mike Leonard, and am just about finished reading it. I think this is one that I'm going to have to buy my own copy of, as I know I'll want to read it again. NBC journalist Mike Leonard takes his aging parents and young adult kids on a whirlwind trip across the country in rented RVs. Last night I laughed so much while reading about one of their adventures, I feared I might rupture something! If you have nutty/funny aging parents or grew up in a family where humor was highly valued, I think you'll like this book as I much as I do.

Here is a link that might be useful:

I remember seeing Mike Leonard on TV talking about this trip. It sounded hilarious at the time.

I saw segments of that road trip. Funny indeed. Think it would be an appropriate read for me right now. I am accumulating my own funny stories, having shared my home with three of my five elders.

Thanks, just requested it from the library. Always looking for good reads!

I hope you'll all enjoy it! Just a word of caution: Mike's mother, Marge, is fond of salty language and there is one event in particular where she and her husband, Jack, talk very candidly and matter-of-factly about a bodily function. Some people might find that kind of stuff offensive; for me, it only adds to the hilarity, particularly if the "rough around the edges" quality only serves to fully flesh out the character. (In fact, the bodily function was what nearly made me rupture my spleen laughing so hard. ;-))

SC, you mean like a Blazing Saddles moment? (One of the most hysterical scenes I've ever seen...ever!)

This is perfect timing. Last night I finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It was recommended by someone here and they were right - it was a very good read.

I popped in to look for another recommendation - I didn't have to go far.

    Thanks!

SC, you mean like a Blazing Saddles moment?

Yes ... only slightly "worse". ;-D

Ooooh ... I'll have to check out "The Book Thief" too!

Thanks, I'll add it to my list.

I just finished Louise Penny's latest book in her Armand Gamache series, The Beautiful Mystery. I first learned of her from one of these threads. I really enjoyed all the books. It isn't necessary to read them all, or in order, but it does help. I don't know if I would have had such a strong reaction today (more than once I yelled "No!" to a character) if I hadn't read all the books. I read on her website they are making a Canadian TV movie of books. I hope I get to see it here in the States.

Thanks! I just reserved it at the library.

Thanks for the rec, sounds like a book I would love!

Well, since we are recommending good books, I'll put in a word for the one I'm reading. Where'd You Go Bernadette is turning out to be warmer and deeper than what I thought it would be. Started out as a riotously funny story about a woman with an illustrious though somewhat mysterious past who is now married to a Microsoft genius, living in Seattle, a place she hates with the passion of a thousand burning suns. She has a precocious daughter who attends a crunchy-granola private school.

I won't reveal any more, but the characterizations are laugh out loud funny. The structure is very clever, interspersing emails, reports, media reportage, even FBI dispatches with straight up narrative. I definitely recommend it.

I read that book quite some time ago and liked it. Another book that I remember enjoying to the same degree was The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian.

Oh gosh, yes! "The Leisure Seeker" is one of my all-time favorites. What a wonderful book! I'm a big Zadoorian fan.

Thanks for the recommendation! Just got the sample for my Kindle. I am needing a new book since I just finished one -- another one I'd recommend, though it's not a funny book. Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio. I really enjoyed it.

Just picked this up at the library and started reading it yesterday. I'm almost through it. Love it.

Thanks for the recommendations!! I also loved Blackberry Winter. Definitely have to read the one based in Seattle, as that's where we live!

I have a stack of books on my bedside table just waiting to be read. I said I wouldn't buy anymore books until I finished that stack, but I can't remember the last time I read a book that made me laugh. Everything I get is so serious. I think I'm going to make an excepetion and get this one!

The last book I read that made me ("almost") wet my pants laughing was Enslaved by Ducks, by Bob Tarte. If anyone has ever had more pets than they technically needed..... or pets that require more effort than a sane person would likely provide...you too may get a kick out of this hilarious memoir.
