Ceramic dinnerware and cold temps....

Hi, I have a question regarding ceramic dinnerware and cold temperatures. I live in the Mideast and yesterday we had 8-10 inches of snow fall on top of 3-4 inches already on the ground. Today the temp has fallen to -13 with a wind chill of -40. My husband used one of my rather expensive ceramic coffee mugs (that came in a set) to do a test of throwing hot water (as hot as he could get it out of the faucet) into the air outside to see if it would turn to snow/ice before it hit the ground. It's so cold here that he simply opened the door and tossed the water out instead of stepping out onto the porch. When he did this, the cup portion separated from the hand and flew into the yard. A few seconds later there was a loud explosion. We are assuming the ceramic cup exploded/shattered once it feel into the snow. My husband firmly believes the mug broke in his hands because the ceramic is cheap (regardless to how much I paid for it). Any ideas as to why the cup would break free from the handle?
