Christmas decorations...

Do you put up a tree and call it Christmas or do you decorate your entire house?

I confess to decorating most of the house. I'm having guests so the guest rooms have a touch of Christmas - a Christmas comforter throw folded at the bottom of the bed; a subtle wreath on the wall and a few old toys on top of dressers and tables...

The other guest room has a dresser with Christmas decorations (artist dolls I made). The hallway has boughs on the stair rails. Subtle but present.

My dining room and living room is total Christmas. I put all my regular decorations away and bring out Christmas ! LOL! Of course, it is Christmas my way. I love antique ornaments and old toys. I collect great Santas (many old) and they are strewn through out. Only my kitchen is spared from Christmas.

My Christmas tree goes all the way up to the high ceilings. It's so tall that I can't use a tree topper. It is filled with antique ornaments, toys and homemade decorations from the kids through the years. My oldest homemade kid ornament is turning 35 years old this year! I turn small things I want to keep but don't know where into ornaments.

Each Christmas includes a theme that suggests our year. This year, my dining room Christmas display includes the two antique liquor bottles we found in our floor while remodeling the upstairs. There is even a small, unopened rubber in the very back of the tree, left over from the year our son had an unauthorized party here. (It's in back, promise!)

When I take out my ornaments, it is like a walk through my own life history. I have things from the very year I moved out of my house. It is so fun to see them every year, at the end of the year.

I know, I am silly but everything in my house means something to me. The art is how to display all the memories and have it look nice and not cluttered. I'm working on that one. LOL!

What does your house look like at Christmas?

My house doesn't look like much. Before the remodel I just didn't have room for Christmas decorations except little things. I actually gave away my ceramic Santa collection I bought from Dillards to my DIL.

Now that the public area of the house is huge, there's just little things, a few swags, tree, a few mantel decorations which looks really silly, lol.

I do have a red tablecloth with a white lace table topper in my DR, and a few decorated apothecary jars.

Oh, I have a small tree in my sitting room.

This year was such chaos, I think after Christmas I'll try to find more decorations on sale.

    Please post some pictures!!

Sounds very pretty Golddust. I do have Christmas in parts of our home. We do our big tree in our sunroom since it is used much like a den - it's an actual room and we use it daily. I also have some other decorations in that room. The kitchen is done in snowmen, vintage and a few newer ones. The dining room is decorated, a Christmas vignette of old santas on a chest, victorian children and an old bottle brush tree under a large cloche on the table. The great room has bits and pieces of Christmas - the mantle of course, with it's thick draping of greenery with sugared apples and pears, ribbons and lights. A smaller tree on the old ice chest. Another vignette on the antique slant top desk, an old ornament displayed in a cloche on a stand, an old Christmas card in a frame, etc. Some more ornaments in an apothecary jar on one of the end tables. We have a beautiful nativity set displayed in this room.

I have not done anything in the bathrooms this year, I usually do something in the guest bathroom off the great room, but didn't this year. In our bedroom, we do have a small tree. Candles in all the windows, including each window of the sunroom. White lights only. The lights alone make a very pretty, festive look.

loved hearing the descriptions of all your decorating for christmas ~ that saying about *less is more* just does not apply at christmas! it is just so much fun to make the house look like a fantasyland for just one month of the year, isn't it ~

every year i promise myself i will cut back (cuz the putting-away part just ain't that much fun) (grin)~~ however, i never actually DO cut back; including this year ~

how about letting us peek at some of the things you've done such a nice job of describing (?)

merry christmas to you & yours

I love decorating for the holidays and Christmas is my very favorite! Our two kids are now 25 and 15 y/o, but they still love to see the entire house decorated for the holidays, and so do DH & I.
I do a lot of volunteer work and this time of the year is so busy. I tend to get stressed out when it interferes with my putting up the decs and trees . . . which is why my house is a disaster zone at the moment ;^D

We put up our family tree in our living room the weekend after Thanksgiving. We call it "The Story of Us" and it has every ornament the kids ever made on it, every ornament we've bought to remember our vacations, DD's tiny elf shoes from her first Halloween costume, etc., etc. It would never win any design awards, but we love it because it really is the story of us as a family.

DD has a 7' narrow tree in her room. DS has a Western themed tree in his . . . or will, whenever I get it done! The family room has a Spanish Colonial tree and the kitchen has DD's small Advent tree and our nutcracker collection lined up along the windowsill.

The Christmas Village is partly up in the foyer's hutch and our Nativity is now on the dining room buffet. We have a collection of over 70 Christmas books that we pull out of storage and put in our dining room bookcase along with some old Christmas toys every December 1st. It totally does NOT work with my Spanish Colonial dining room, but I don't care. My sweet DD loves it!

I have a nice size Santa and Snowman collection that I'd love NOT to put up this year, but at almost-16, DD is begging for them all to go up along the top of our laundry room cabs again. (Sigh!) We'll see.

The outside icicle lights are up and I have our order in for 14 dozen farolitos to line the front portal (it's 80ft. long), down both sides of our walkway, around our circular guest parking area and down our 260-ft driveway. Can you believe that I used to make them all myself?!? I got smart, though, and now order them from our local Boy Scout troup!

I even decorate out on our front portal, although not many people see it, as we live in the mountains. Our UPS and FedEx guys appreciate it, though (LOL), and our guests on Christmas Day do, too.

So, do I put up more than just a tree? Yep, I put a few other things up, too ;^D

Ouch, my back hurts thinking about lighting all of those farolitos!

Right now we focus mainly on a tree with a village and a Lionel train. I hope to add to my collection of nativity sets over time but right now I only have 2 and those go up. We have a few odds and ends here and there throughout the house. Eventually I hope to put up another tree because ours seems to be overcome with train ornaments and I would like to space them out.

I'm such a decorating Scrooge. I love seeing others Christmas decor, I just HATE doing it for my house. I put it off as long as I can because I can't stand doing it. Oddly enough, I love to do table scapes.

I wonder if it has to do with all the Christmas seasons we did Holiday shows and I had to decorate our booth??

But I usually put up a smallish tree in the front room, and decorate with lots of silvers, copper, gold and teal. That room is my crystal & shimmer room, and where we do the gift opening.

I put up a larger tree in the library that I put the primitives and stuffed snowmen and Santas. I put up lots of pine cones and a little sleigh with faux apples & pears & greens. I also decorate the wagon wheel light in the family room, and put up goodies here and there.

Last year I did a nice decoration on the dining area chandy that everyone loved. Covered it with garlands, faux fruit and poinsettias.

This year I'm not doing the library tree... primarily due to having a new pup. The tree in the front room is already being eyed by the cats. They get up on the mantel and are trying to climb it, even tho I haven't yet decorated it. This weekend I'm doing my decorating...if I'm not so humbuggy that is!
