Lowe's vs. custom cabinets

I have already logged 10 hours at the local Lowe's over the last week, going over all sorts of options...they currently have a great promotion going on. After reading lots of posts here, and seeing pictures, it seems like custom cabinets might be better (and financially similar in price). Any opinions? thanks!

Depends on your budget and your door style.

For cabinets alone our kitchen cabs cost slightly less from a custom company then similar from Home Depot when comparing apples to apples.

We have slab overlay doors, some of which are checkered. I also have some custom items like a trash can that pulls out from BOTH sides of the peninsula, custom can draws, custom toe kick draws. My lower cabinets are all 28" deep to accommodate deeper counters without wasting storage space. Uppers are all 15" deep for easier access over the 30" counters. None of these items would have been available from a big box store.

In addition, I have NO filler in my kitchen, every piece fits, I have bells and whistles I couldn't get at Lowes or HD.

In the end I probably spent more than I would have from a big box store but I also have a kitchen that is unique, meets our needs and is 110% functional.

Without knowing the details of the promotion and what a local cabinet maker would charge, it hard to make the choice for you. I suggest you research local cabinet makers and get some estimates before deciding what's right for you.

Whatever you decide, bring your layout here before you order anything.

Our experience is quite the opposite!

Not all cabinet makers have the same expertise!

Our builder's finished cabinets, (shown to us in another build) did not have the precision fit, catalytic finish with lifetime warranty, ball bearing Blum drawer glides, or soft close drawers. (Most custom cabinet makers don't make their own drawers fronts or cabinet doors, instead they order them online and then stain/paint to suit)!

We have Kraftmaid, all wood boxes with shaker style doors, maple with toffee stain plus painted maple island cabinets. Also pullouts, deep drawers, lazy susan, plus file cabinet w/pull out for kitchen desk.

We have only one 1 3/4" filler between the counter cabs and tall oven cab. Most manufacturers cabinets come in 3" increments so you may not need any fillers or very few!

    Builder's carpenter wanted 10K versus Lowe's 8K (plus gave us a $500 gift card).

I would take a good look at the quality of the box construction of the custom,cabinets/drawers. If you plan on any Rev-a-shelf type products, make sure they come in your custom cabinet sizes.

Cost and quality made our decision easier!
