Photo Printer Question....

I know there's a photography forum, but doesn't seem to get as much traffic as here, so I'll try here first with my question.

Our DIL has gotten very into photography...bought a really nice camera, and has done some photo shoots with a couple of clients, plus lots of other photography, and I think she's quite good. In today's paper, there's an article about photo printers, and I'm wondering if any of you have one, or could give me any pointers about this. I was thinking that this might be a good Christmas gift for her.

Thank you for any feedback you can give me!

There are lots of decent photo printers out there. Which one you pick depends in part on how much you want to spend and in part on how large your DIL will want to print. If she's doing photo shoots with clients, my guess is that she'll want to have the option to print big.

I have this one, and can recommend it highly. It prints up to 13 x 19". Because of this, the printer itself takes up a lot of room. It wouldn't do for a small desk.

The Canon line of photo printers has a good reputation. You might do an Amazon search and check out the different models and reviews. Epson has a good rep, too, but I don't recommend it because of so many reports of ink clogs if the printer isn't used often enough.

I had an HP photo printer for years and was happy with it, but I don't know anything about their current line.

One possibility is that your DIL might want to print her own occasionally, and for casual photos, but send the pro images out. That's what I did when I was exhibiting, uploading my image files to Mpix.com. They do beautiful work.

You sound like a good mother-in-law!

Lizzie_grow, you can get that printer brand new for about half the Amazon price on eBay....

The eBay seller says the UPC code has been removed. That indicates to me that he probably bought the printers when Canon was offering one of its rebates. (I bought my own with a $200 Canon rebate). I don't think Canon would knowingly have sent multiple rebates to the same individual, BTW. And I still don't understand how he can sell them at that price (close to what he paid for them) and ship them for free. The printer weighs a lot! I see he sold a couple for $189.99.

His feedback (97.9%) isn't very good. I'd be suspicious, myself, although it may be a great deal.

Oooh, look what I found: Canon is offering some nice rebates! These expire at the end of December.

Thank you, Best Years for the ebay suggestion. I don't think I can do that because I want her to be able to return/exchange it. I printed the info on the Canon rebates.

She's meeting with a couple today about doing their wedding photos in late spring. I think they're flying DIL, DS, and GD to Fl. for the wedding!! DIL has a doctorate in Physical Therapy, and so photography is a great use of her creative skills, too. She even made me look pretty good for a pic on FB, which she insisted I needed!! Not sure about the bent arm pose on my hip, though....heh heh!

Wow--she must be good!! (I mean because the couple is flying her and her family to FL . . . not because she made you look good in your FB pic.) :-)

Good catch lizzie -I didn't even check the rating. That and the fact that the UPC code has been removed would steer me away from it too.
