kitchen cabinets

I have the biggest mess going on....In the beginning of remodel I had decided to paint my cabinets, so primed all of them. We had someone we new come in and knock down wall between dining room and kitchen..put in tile floor (which cracked everywhere) pulled out oven unit on wall cabinet, removed cabinets over stove and donated them. THEN...

moved to Florida and now I am living in a disaster!

My budget is tight, fortunately I have plumber and electrician in family.

So I have these primed cabinets and cracked tile floor and where do I begin? I am trying to find someone that can do counters etc. and I am also searching for midrange cabinets more functional than decorative...small kitchen 11x11 in tri-level home any suggestions?

My delimina came about reading someones msg about their cabinets (Shenadoah from Lowes)actually there were quite a few negative comments I read from others.

Anyway, I have had one mtg with a design person at Home Depot and I was looking at the American Woodmark cabinets...now someone wrote American Woodmark from HD is also the same company Shendoah from Lowes..... so that is a litle scary...sorry for all the rambling...wondering if anyone knows anything about these cabinets and could give me some advice.

Thank you for letting me vent ...it helps!:)

Try googling kitchen cabinet doors. There are companies that will make new doors to your specifications that you can then install on the existing framework. They are much cheaper than even the cheapest new cabinets.

I have cheap cabinets from Lowes in my current kitchen. They are almost three years old and have held up very well. The KD told me I wouldn't be happy with them, but we had basically gutted the house on purchase and I needed a kitchen right then (besides budget constraints) so we just bought what they had in stock. Here is a picture.

So if you can't find anyone who can refinish your existing cabinets or provide doors for cheaper. I say go for it, what is important is you fix your home and kitchen so you can enjoy it again.

    Good Luck

How about grabbing a brush and painting your existing cabinets (how nice that they're already primed)? In a couple days your plates are back where they belong. Or go check out Ikea. Really. Unless you hate the styles available, it's a great option. Your handy guys can install them.

I think repairing the floor is going to take some $$ so you may find that you need to paint the cabs you have and put the money in flooring.

You could hire a local Handyman (call your independent hardware stores and ask for referrals) to do a lot of the work. Lowes or HD can do the formica counters. I've used them on 3 different projects for formica counters and have been happy with the result.

If you're not up to painting the cabinets, call your local paint store and again ask for referrals. Someone may want a small indoor job this time of the year.

I am so sorry for your mess! I have had American Woodmark cabinets in my kitchen for over 20 years (contractor installed) the boxes are veneered particle board and the doors appear to be all wood, oak I think.

When I started my remodel, I felt they were still in pretty good shape and wanted to just update the layout and add more, but was unable to match them (style and color are both obsolete).

I think if budget was a strong issue, I would consider them again. Good luck with your project!
