Computer area lighting

I'm having problems figuring out what kind of light/s to do near my computer desk. During the day, sunlight works great, but at night, I need something.

The room has a ceiling fan with lights, but it's too bright for me. Yet I don't want to get rid of that fixture...I'm looking for something to use specifically in the computer area.

I tried a clip on lamp and clipped it on a shelf on the wall. 60 watt bulb. But I never could get it positioned correctly. If I pointed it right at the computer area, it made horrible glare on the screen (LCD), but if I aimed it at the ceiling, it wasn't enough light.

I'm thinking perhaps some kind of pendant light, hanging directly over my head.

Does anyone else have any ideas? I hate to start buying lights/lamps and end up with a box of lamps but nothing that works.

I'd start by figuring out where you want the light to fall, then figure out how to make it happen. Sit at your desk and let someone else play with that clip-on lamp and an extension cord, moving it to various positions and orientations while you pay attention to how things look. My guess is that you want to light the desk surface and keyboard, and that it might be nice to throw some light on the wall behind the screen to reduce contrast between the bright screen and the dark wall, making it easier on your eyes. One or two small pendants might work, but I think I'd rather have them off to the side, rather than directly overhead. Track lights come to mind too; there's a wide variety of bulbs available that would give you a lot of flexibility.
