Landscape lighting getting power?!!!

hi guys, I recently bought a house that was built in 1994. The house has a deck in the backyard with a fan and some areas to plug appliances in. there is also what used to be a water feature (pond and waterfall under the tree) with some landscape lighting pointing towards the waterfall. there is also landscape lighting (spot lights)on some trees. most of the bulbs are broken and light enclosure broken off from the wires.

when we brought the inspector to walk the house, we determined that there was no power going to the deck so we assumed there was no power going to the lighting fixtures either. There are some plugs at the base of the big tree. A low voltage transformer with some type of timer built into it, was plugged into the tree but we disconnected the low voltage transformer.

anyways, no spot lights had been working until last night. yesterday we touched/wiggled one of the spot lights and it came on. now this mornig the light is back off. so my question are

-where is this spotlight getting power from? we have no idea of where to control the power to the spotlights. we think it might be a safety problem.

-the low voltage transformer was disconnected. so, wehre the hell is the spotlight getting power from? the other spotlights are in bad shape--needing bulbs are totally broken off, so we don't know it they work.

-is there a way for us the homeowners to check to see if we can find the power source?

any ideas? who should we even call to check on the spotlights and to see if they can be salvaged? an electrician with a specialization in landscape lighting?

Thanks
