Looking for design help... Tile backsplash.

I have been *very* particular about every aspect of this design... We moved into the house in August, ordered the cabinets by Sept 1, and had everything to start the remodel by mid October. Slowly but surely my husband has been putting our kitchen together. The hardest part of this remodel has been the backsplash. In fact, I have such trouble with tile backsplashes, that I never even bothered to put one in in the old house because I couldn't come up with anything!

So here is what we've got - Schuler perimeter cabinets in Divinity White, island in Carriage black (no antiquing or distressing). Perimeter granite is absolute black and island is Juparana Delicatus. Paint color is a bluish grey. Medium toned wood floors. 3 black (outdoor) onion pendant lights will be hung over the island, and one high up over the sink.

I'm at a total loss. I don't want to take away from the Delicatus granite in the island, so I was thinking something more textured rather than a multi-size tile pattern. Found one I loved, but at $30/sq ft it was completely out of the budget. That was the Crossville Modern Mythology line - color Griffin. Would like to spend $15 or under. No beiges or tans... light creams (close to white) or light greys would be my preference.

Pictures help of course :)

Before... (forgot to take my own before... this is stolen from the listing on the house)

After - and please excuse the lack of crown molding/undercab molding and the pink hue - we still have one wall left to paint but we're building a shelving unit into it, so dont want to paint till thats done :)

Actually, the tile backsplash that I posted earlier today would look lovely. The color is muted, the interest is more in the shape and texture. With that being said, I posted an inquiry to see if anybody knew approximate cost, I couldn't find any information online. I seem to be drawn to things that are so far out of my budget so if I was a betting gal, I'd say it is likely more than $15 per sq ft. But just to get an idea of the type of look you are going for....It comes in different colors, linked below.

$81.99 per 5 pack at Overstock.com, which is just slightly over your budget, but it's perfect with your colors.

Thanks for the suggestions :) Definitely want a more monotone look though.
The sunflower is gorgeous - I'm hitting the tile stores again tomorrow now that we're a little more complete and I have actual pictures to show the store employees. I can't believe I'm having such trouble with this again!

Dont worry about a little color in your beautiful kitchen. Love the contrasting island, I have the same. I think glass tile in the black white gray theme would look great

A glass subway tile the color of your walls would blend perfectly, but give a little sparkle to your kitchen.

    Your kitchen is beautiful!

Oh I'm definitely not afraid of color... I just know myself well enough to know that I'll get sick of color... so I keep it to my accents & accessories so I can change it as often as I like. Its the same reason I keep my furniture neutral... I can repaint the walls as often as can for $50-ish...

Hubby was working on the crown molding again tonight. Looks great, except I dislike the under cab molding. It's not the one we chose, but honestly I'm so sick of fighting with lowes I'm just going to live with it. Its a bit too big for the space :/

love the subway tile idea... going to have that on my list for tomorrow.

Here are a couple of gardenweb kitchens that I have marked for inspiration that could work for you.
Kitchenaddict has a really nice textured monotone backsplash that doesn't compete with her gorgeous granite.

How about something like this from daki's kitchen in the link below? Maybe you will find the size more interesting than the traditional subway tile. I have scoped this one out and it looks like it could be in your price range. Or maybe when you say textured, are you trying to stay away from the glass tile route, it is quite different than the one that you posted.

And here is a link to the tiles in daki's kitchen in the 4x24 shape. There are other color options, silver or avorio maybe? See, it comes in under budget even.

If you like the first picture, what about a marble hex or marble brick mosaic? I used these guyshref> when I did my Cape kitchen last year. It was around 12/sf. I originally bought a sample of there's off e-bay for like $5 or something. And while I was rather weary of doing our whole backsplash through an ebay store, we had zero issues. No broken sheets and it arrived when they said it would.

I posted my last reply while the above subway reference was written so I didn't see it. I did my marble BS in a smaller subway size. Here is a picture (that looks really bland because it was the day of the final install :-)

Is that the place on Cape? GORGEOUS. Simple. I love it. Actually that marble was the first sample I brought home and it fought with the delicatus... I was disappointed, I was sure it would work.

My husband and I (newlyweds) just sold both our homes on the Cape when he got transferred here. My parents have a retirement home in Dennis - we visit often :)

Ahhh... this is what I was trying to think of for you. Just got reminded of it on another thread. Glass subway, but with texture.

It's from the Solistone Mardigras collection

Chris, love your backsplash! Where did you get your tile?

Thanks, Linelle. I bought it on eBay :-) It was through MosaicTileWholesaler.com. I was a little skeptical but everything arrived in perfect condition and was exactly like the sample they had sent me.

Finally picked a backsplash and I think I love it. I can't seem to get it to photograph properly, but its the identical taupe & whitish gray in my island granite. And it was only $5/sq ft from Home Depot! It took a little extra work, these tiles were 50% light, 50% dark, so I painstakingly popped out about 10 of the dark tiles per sheet & replaced them with light ones. I'm very happy with the way it turned out! Please excuse the lack of a light rail on one of the cabinets, and a missing piece from the other - just waiting for the grout to dry :)
