would I be crazy to do this?

You all are so helpful to one another and while I read your comments and admire your rooms, I have not participated much on here. I need help from whomever will be kind enough to do so! I'm terrified of making a costly mistake. I need to choose rugs for my new home. I have a very open floor plan where by walking in the front door you to see the entry area, stairway, dining room, family room, back hall to master and kitchen. I have an area rug in the dining room that I need to work around and brand new hardwood floors that need to be protected from the two dogs. The existing rug is the same as the middle sample photo only with a burgandy/maroon main field where the sample is black. So I need to buy a runner for the entry, an area rug for the family room, 3 runners (or 2 runners and a 3x5) for the kitchen, runner up the stairs and on the landings and a runner for the back hall. I had some picked out, one delivered but before I allow the order to be placed for the NON RETURNABLES I'm slowing down a bit. Would these patterns in the whole area together be too crazy? If anyone wants to help me I can send more photos to explain the set up. Thank you in advance!

I think your choices look nice but I'd try some other sources to see if they will allow you to keep them on approval. Are they all custom sizes? Try Peerless rugs, online. They stock Karastan and others and will let you try them at home. Their prices are great. It's just not worth the risk!

I wouldn't buy anything that was non returnable, especially a rug.

The stairs and all the runners are cut to fit my home and cannot be returned. The stairway, entry hall runner and back hall runner were going to be in the middle sample-which is a Karastan. The local company did let me bring them home for a couple of days but then I got cold feet when the 9x12 was delivered yesterday (the bottom sample). They measured the stairs but I have held them up on placing the order. All of that stuff is custom cut. The same for the top sample runner-it will be custom cut for the kitchen. I'm starting to think maybe I should do one area in a sisal type rug or seagrass-less pattern for the area overall. But the living room (9x12) area would be the one to do that and I really like that rug with my new furniture choices. Do you think sisal would look strange as an entry runner? Can you even do sisal up the stairs? What about sisal in a food prep area? Would those natural rugs snag from dogs' claws wrestling around on it?

Forget the sisal. ESPecially for stairs. A true nightmare to keep clean.

Your choices above are good. If you liked the samples in your home, you'll be fine. You cannot get a better machine made rug than a Karastan ;-)

Here's more photos showing the fam room rug in place. The only furniture staying in there is the leather chair. The blue wing chair, maybe or maybe not. The fabric sample pics are a solid that is going on the new sofa and the print (another one!) on the new chair. Both are ordered and not in yet. You can see the older rug under the dining table in the background. Please disregard the mess-I literally just moved in. These photos show a little more about how open the floor plan is. What do you think?

I love your family room rug, and I also am wild about your second runner. My only concern is that it may be too much like your dining room rug. I'd stay within the Karastan family as much as possible, as they seem to work together very well and will look great. I know Karastan makes several runners; I'd probably look for one that complements your Dining room rug, without using the same pattern/different colors. Your first runner looks nice but not the quality of your others; which could be fine
depending on where you use it. Your home is going to be lovely and very comfortable at the same time.

I love the 2nd and 3rd rugs, but I'm not as wild about the first. My concern is that you may have too many patterns going on. I would suggest looking into a solid for the stairs and a runner or two - something to break up all the patterns so they don't start to run together.

    Love your new house!

Hgtvjunkie, I thought about you this morning when I walked down the stairs on my runner! I do think you would be fine with the Karastan as it will likely be an investment that will be on your stairs for a long time. It will work with so many different patterns colors, and decorating styles, and the rug in your dining room; although it's the same pattern, will be under your table and chairs so it would be broken up by that. I think that's a great choice to start with, and won't look too busy. If I were you I'd go with that and see how it looks, then move on to the next runner. From what I could see, your first one, is ok, but you might rather have a sisal or sisal look bound in a solid to break up the patterns you have. I love Karastan rugs, and had them in every room in my downstairs for over 15 years, and they wore like iron but finally I wanted a break from those patterns and took half of them out this year. I now have some quieter rugs in some rooms, and it really updated the feel of the house and gives things a more calm look. So I would use the Karastan runner with the two rugs you have, then work with your upholstery, and finally get your last runner(s) when you see things in place. You have a great start and lots to work with! Good Luck

Thank you jjam and justnotmartha for your ideas. You both mention exactly the concerns that I am thinking. I have been worried that the 2nd sample is too much the same as the dining room. And I have been thinking of breaking up all the pattern with some solids. I am headed to the rug store today to get more samples. They also offer a design service (free if you purchase) so I am lining someone up to come out and help. My biggest concern is that when I get the new furniture, the chair with the paisley print (which is not too intrusive of a print but a print nonetheless) will be sitting on the new family room rug with just a small bit of wood between it and the dining room rug. Also the chair is not skirted so all three patterns will be visible from all angles around the chair-know what I mean? So while I love the family room rug, I'm considering maybe going with a neutral tone on tone mid range carmel brown or grayish or maybe even a moss green like the new sofa. Then I would do the runners in a complimentary pattern to the dining room and maybe plain runners with a small patterned border in the kitchen. That first runner was for the kitchen and looked awesome against the wood and tile in there. I did not want the high end Karastan in the kitchen where I'm sure I'll be splashing food around on it. The second runner is Karastan and it is very similar to the dining room. Another concern for me is that the Karastan runner going up the steps, while gorgeous, is quite expensive. But I want quality on the steps that will last awhile too. Anymore thoughts while I continue to tear my hair out? :) Thanks again.
