New Dining Room Rug

Subtitled "I Think I'm Starting To Get IKEA-ized!"

I posted awhile ago about putting a seagrass or sisal rug in my DR to replace the blue wool rug that was a total mismatch to my new wall color. At the time I was considering ordering from an online vendor and the best price I found was ~$325.

Well. For Christmas my sister got a hefty IKEA gift card so we decided to go there to look for a futon for her guest room. I happened to search the site and discovered they sell sisal rugs! Who knew?!

Anyway, we went, I saw and I bought. And...spent less than half what I thought it would cost :). The IKEA version was $149. Best of all I had gotten a rebate from the wood flooring I put in last summer so it didn't *really* cost me anything. BTW, my husband refers to that type of thinking as my Lucy Ricardo logic. But I digress.

Here is the dining room before:

And here is the room with the new sisal rug:

I'm happy too because if the sisal doesn't hold up well to dirt and cats, I'm not out all that much money. Heck for $150 I could afford to replace it every other year or so or even more frequently as long as IKEA is around. Plus it feels fine underfoot; I was a bit concerned that sisal would be too scratchy but no problems there either.

And last but not least my sister not only found a great futon, but it was on sale so she was also able to get a couple of Billy bookcases with glass doors, several lamps, CD racks to corral her fiance's massive collection, a garbage can for the kitchen and a bunch of kitchen linens. It was a happy day for both of us.

Great shopping day for you and your sister.

I love the rug and the pictures on the wall really enhance the decor. Just one thought, though, have you considered placing the dining table so that the short end faces the camera? You might have to turn the rug too since it appears to be rectangular. That way the rug won't abut so close to the china cabinet and the room will actually look more spacious. A blue and white china bowl on the center of the table would look beautiful and give just a touch of color to the room.

It great and at a great price, too! I like that it's big enough to pull out your chairs without them sliding off the rug, too. Congrats!!

Oh I love it and I didn't think I would. Love the wall color too, what is it please?

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'm so happy-the room meets the 'makes me smile every time I look at it' test and I figure that's a great way to start a new year.

Ingrid, you can't really see from this picture but the DR is the short end of an L-shaped DR/LR combination. The hallway leading from our bedrooms passes the 'long' side of the rectangle which is our main transit route through the center of the house. So we can't shift the table to a different orientation as it would block the traffic pattern.

And yayagal, I avoided mentioning the color in fear of banishment if I mentioned my Silver Sage lookalike paint One More Time :). It's BM Quiet Moments, which is a few shades up the color chart from Gray Wisp (the BM SS clone). I had it mixed at 50% so it's a bit lighter than straight off the color chart too.

Off to enjoy my new rug some more.

Gotta chime in here.I think it looks great. I think the bit of border is a great contrast to the floor and nicely defines the area. Nice pick.

" Every room should have a touch of black" ( read somewhere) and I agree, and you have it in your border.Looks so nice and freshens up the space...a younger look. I would also LOVE to see you turn the rug and table about.Paint is so soft and restful, too. Nice!

Love it! The room looks gorgeous!

I know this is an old post -- but, DW was wondering if your rug is Egeby dark brown/natural.

    Cheers,

I just saw your thread on page 2, I don't know how I missed the new rug. The new rug looks great. Is the cat concerned with it at all? It looks to be very tightly woven so he/she may not even care to bother with it.

Dirk, yes it is indeed Egeby.

Brutuses, so far so good regarding the rug as a scratching mat. The cats do a bit of scratching on it, but I am not seeing any damage so far. Still love it!

Great rug and beautiful room!! Love the sisal rugs too...yes, Ikea can be a wonderful spot:)

I love the garden doors too...just want I want off my kitchen, but don't think it's going to work. (maybe next home!)

You make finding a rug look so easy! Love it!

What a great rug for a great price! I love how the rug border defines your space.

I love it. I've been looking for the same...had NO idea that IKEA carried them. Thanks for sharing!

If I may ask, did it have a strong smell when you brought it home? That's my one concern with the ones that I've looked at so far. But then everyone tells me that I smell things that no one else does!

"If I may ask, did it have a strong smell when you brought it home? That's my one concern with the ones that I've looked at so far."

I know what you mean-sisal/jute/seagrass does tend to have a distinct odor, doesn't it?

With the caveat that, as you say mpmg, everyone's olfactory sensitivity is different I didn't have any problems with the IKEA rug and a strong odor. And nobody else complained either--both my husband and MIL, who is here often, are much more aware of and sensitive to smells. If they didn't notice I'd surmise the smell wasn't an issue.

And thanks for all the nice compliments! In this case I'm thrilled people checked out the rest of the room; guess I dodged a decorating bullet there ;).
