Do you have open space above your upper cabinets? What about some hidden overcabinet fluorescents for ambient lighting, with the UCs for task?

How about placing the track lighting on the side of the beams instead of at the bottom. I've used this technique on several applications where we wanted the beams to be seen. If you decide to do this, you should use lampholders (nothing fancy) where you can change the bulb easily.

The nice part about track on a cathedral ceiling is that you can place the track heads where they are needed. I have usually run the track the length of the beam and that allowed for additional lighting if needed.

There are several websites for track lighting that will show you the heads available: Nora, WAC, Lightolier, Juno.

Check it out and see if there is anything that interests you. The lowest profile is probably low voltage. Just be sure that the track head can go straight down from the side.

I have a similar deal in my newly renovated kitchen; Log home, cathedral ceiling. I used cable lighting from a company called Tech Lighting. I installed it myself but depending on complexity, familiarity with electricity and local code, you may want to hire this out to a certified electrician. The system is available with many different element heads and the cable enables you to install lighting virtually anywhere.
