I have a desk lamp with a halogen bulb, and like the halogen lights over my kitchen prep area, I think the light it gives off for task lighting is terrific. It does get very hot, however -- there's a little tab on it for adjusting the head, so you don't have to touch the head itself. I would think 35 watts for a desk lamp is plenty, since I have 100 watts over a 5-foot prep area, but 4 feet above the surface. With my aging eyes, every time I turn on those lights, I emit an audible "Wow".

If you are worried about glare, you can turn the head up so that it reflects off of the ceiling. I have done this and the light is wonderful. Also, the lamp you are looking at has a full range dimmer on it. Therefore, you can turn it down if it is too bright or hot. Whether 35 watts is enough is up to you. I would suggest a trip to a lighting showroom to check it out. I know as I get older, I am using more and more light. This lamp only goes up to 35 watts and cannot be changed. The halogen bulb puts about about 420 lumens which is equivalent to a about 25% less than a 60 watt light bulb.
