Outdoor Lighting

I found a wire connector on my lights melted yesterday when all but one of the lights on one line was not working. I trimmed the wires and replaced the connector. This morning I went out and found the connector and wire very warm. I'm not sure how to fix the problem. Here's what I have: a 300 watt transformer with 2 lines running off it of 12/2 wire. One line is 40 ft. and has 6-20 watt lights and the other is 75 ft. and has 3-50 watt lights. All the connections are made with screw on caps inserted into direct bury waterproof capsules. The melted connector was just after thr first light on the 6 light run. This had melted before and I had to splice another piece of wire into the run to be able to reconnect it. That first splice connection is the culpret. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
