The couch is here!

I posted last year asking for help choosing a couch and then on the color. When we ordered the seating they said it could take up to 6 months for them to arrive which would have been March. Then we got a pleasant surprise just before the new year to make a delivery appointment. The couch and chairs arrived last Thursday.

Here's how it turned out:

Some here aren't fans of vertical blinds (too industrial or cheap looking were mentioned in the thread where I asked for suggestions on them), but I feel that they work well covering the very large window here and fit well with the contemporary lines of our MCM house so I'm glad we got them.

After much debate on couch configurations including considering a 3 seat couch plus love seat and a sectional with a big corner, we decided on the theater seating arrangement with a "sector arm" so that every couch seat has at least one arm plus two recliners. The little table on one arm and the table in the sector arm (which turns and raises so I can perch my laptop on it) are very handy. The color is off in this picture - the light from the window confused the camera:

These are so much more comfortable than our old couch. We are very happy with the looks as well.

Thanks for the advice!

Some additional details:

The rug is from Turkey(probably Kurdish)

The seating is Ekornes Stressless Space theater seating and Dream Recliners.

The family room cabinets were custom made to our design by a local cabinet maker. My husband turned the knobs for the cabinets from walnut from neighborhood trees. The components are behind the speaker cloth door in the cabinet to the left of the TV. The unit for them has adjustable shelves and is mounted on a turntable so it can be turned to access the backs for cabling.

Perhaps some time we will find something to put over the mantel.

The couch and chairs look perfect in your room; stylewise and color!

Wait til I show DH your stereo turntable shelving. He will definitely appreciate that!

It is all beautiful and I know how comfortable Stressless furniture is! We have one chair coming on Thursday and we can't wait. We're already arguing over whose turn it is to sit in it.

I'm sure your family will be happy with this home theater and kitchen - its all just lovely.

Thank you everyone. I had worried that the theater seating group would be too big or the room would be too crowded - we had another room that one of the recliners could go to if it took to much space in that room. Actually, it feels like there is more room with the new furniture. I think the couch does take a bit less depth than the old one and the styling and open bottom makes it look lighter.

It just looks so right to me.

Congrats on getting the chair woodie.

Cat_mom, our GC had suggested a couple of local custom cabinet makers but when we got a bid from one of them, it was apparent that they really didn't get making free standing or entertainment center cabinets - much more focused on fixed kitchen cabinets. One wanted to do the tall cabinets in separate upper and lower pieces.

We found a local company that specialized more in furniture including entertainment systems and when we talked to them, they suggested the component unit. We were a bit hesitant about going with them because it was difficult to know if they were credible. Our wonderful GC checked them out and gave the okay to use them so then we were able to give them the order with confidence.

It looks great. I think the verticals work perfectly in your room and I love the browns- brown is so warm and cozy, especially with the red rug.

Yayagal, the knobs are another story - I didn't want to do the same hardware as in the kitchen, not even the same material, but I wasn't sure what would be right. Shiny stuff like nickle didn't seem right for us. Then there was the whole knob vs handle question. Many knobs aren't as comfortable to use as handles.

I started looking at my husband's Fine Woodworking magazines to see what was on that furniture. The hardware on much of the furniture tended to be smaller. There was one knob that I saw in an ad that had a very pleasing and utilitarian shape. The ad wasn't about knobs - it just happened to have a picture of some drawers. That got me thinking more about using knobs and wood knobs in particular.

I looked for wood knobs on-line, but they were often rather clunky looking. My husband shared an article in one of his magazines about making a more refined knob shape by returning some of those knobs. We started to talk about that or him turning the knobs. We talked about shapes and I sketched a profile that seemed like it would work. He turned some samples to help choose the size and home in on shape.

The shape we settled on has a long enough base to allow comfortable finger room and a smooth curve to meet the head and the right slope to the back of the head so our fingers settle comfortably behind the head.

Once we had one with the look and feel we wanted, he turned a lot more - about twice as many as we needed. Since they were hand turned, there was some variation in shape and the walnut pieces varied in color a bit. I sorted them into matched pairs and we used the best matches on the pairs of doors where the knobs are right next to each other in the wide cabinet and the credenza. We also put matched pairs on the left and right opening tall cabinets in case they are ever in a room where they are right next to each other.

He used a brass insert on the knobs for the screw so they should last well to. He put the insert into each block before turning and used that to attach the block to the lathe so the knobs would be well centered on the screw.

I think the area above the FP could use something colorful and interesting, perhaps a wall sculpture or a painting? with a few colors of your rug perhaps in it or a wall sculpture in bronze or copper? I luv my verticals and nothing wrong with yours either.

Wow, these really look great. I think DH would drool over them. The home theatre storage cabinet is awesome, too.

Those look great. Are they comfortable?

Yes, they are extremely comfortable. We saw many couches that had looks that would suit the room. These were more comfortable than any other couches I tried.
