Moving Kitchen Need Help with everything

Very soon we are moving our kitchen to an area that will be 11 x 19. This will be both our kitchen and dining area (which will open into our living room). Our family is me, husband, and three young kids. We have no design sense and need help since we think we are starting construction this month! Our current kitchen is miniscule and we cant fit our family around the table. So the change needs to be made now...

Since the area will open into the dining room, we are going with an L-shaped kitchen...

Here are our concerns:

The overall layout

Do we have enough room for the island (bc I really want one)

Cabinet colors : so far we like Biscotti with cocoa glaze?? or should we get a darker color

Should the fridge be near the sliders/table or should we keep the double oven there?

We know it is not a big space.. but it is what we have (we are taking down to bedrooms for this renovation)Anything will be better than what we have now!!

We really need help! Thank you!

Oh I cant figure out how to add my diagram!!!!

Welcome! You've started a long but ultimately fruitful journey!

I suggest you start by reading the "Read Me" thread...I've linked it below. It discusses administrative type things like how to post pictures and links as well as kitchen planning, caring for your kitchen, etc. Since you seem to be a bit overwhelmed, so I suggest you do the following:

    1. Take the "Sweeby Test" (see the "Read Me" thread)

Read the "Layout Help" section of the "Read Me" thread several times (at least 3 or 4 times!)
Think about how your current kitchen functions and write down your likes/dislikes
Think about how you and your family use your kitchen and surrounding areas in your home
Read the "Layout Help" section again and this time write down your answers to all the questions
Read the "Planning for Storage" section once or twice
Come up with a first stab at a layout if you can.

    • If you can't come up w/a layout, then draw up the "blank" space (as described in the "Layout Help" section) and post it here

If you can, then post your layout here for a critique.
In both cases, follow the directions in the "Layout Help" section for drawing up your layout or space and include the answers to the questions from #5

    Good luck!

BTW...you're probably not receiving emails of follow-up postings, even though you checked the box requesting them. This is b/c you don't have the email option turned on in your profile. See the "Read Me" thread for more information. Scroll down to the post with the subject "Getting Emails Sent To You...3-step Process".

Each box is a foot.... the yellow box in bottom corner is a chimney :(
The black box near sliders is double oven...

Here you go. Just copy the HTML code on the photobucket page and paste it here.

Where is the entrance into the room? Fridge placement is very dependent on traffic flow.

Your island is too long...there's less than a foot of clearance to the adjacent wall. Personally, I would put a table on wheels there to give you extra work space and ditch the sink/plumbing and stools.

There isn't enough clearance around much of that table. Would like to hear others' opinions about a banquette with seats on 2 walls there.

The entrance is the entire front (which opens mostly into living room) (so from the fridge to the chimnet is open).

I was considering no sink and probably wont put one there... I am going to use the island for breakfast for the kids (7, 4, 3) and baking... I wanted it to have electric for the kitchenaid..

As for the table, I know it will be tight and was just talking to husband about building in a bench for seating...
    I love all this help...

I am assuming the south end of the drawing is open to a family room, and not a full wall?

You only have about 30" between the fridge and the island, which is problematic, as is the placement of the double ovens vs. the seating area--very tight, with no room to use the sliders. But, the table drawn appears to be almost 60" in diameter.

You have 36" for the double ovens...this limits you to KitchenAid, Kuppersbusch, Viking, BlueStar, Gaggenau, Dacor or Wolf--all singles. If you are planning a 30" double oven stack, it fits in 30".

As drawn this may not be an optimal kitchen for an island.

I dont really understant what you meant about the double oven space? How much space do i need for double?

As for the table, I am not sure what kind of table I am going to have...

If i move the island over (42 inches) will that be ok?

Can you redraw your plans...30'' ovens, banquette with seats on 2 sides, and rotate that island 90 degrees and make it 3 x 4 1/2 feet without the prep sink? That island will be more functional oriented like that anyway. Do you have a pantry anywhere? You'll need for storage for 3 growing kids.

I think I like the island the way you suggested so I redid the draft.... What do you think? Oh, I have a pantry behind the fridge in the hallway that I will be using...
Hope you can see and comment on the picture...I cant seem to figure it out.

If you are planning seating at the island, you have only about 30 inches between the wall and the seating. That might be OK when the kids are little, but it's never going to fly for bigger people--especially the guy in the middle, who will be kind of stuck there. :-)

If I understand correctly, the seating at the island will now back on the room behind it and is not by a wall. If that is correct, I'd move it a little further from your sink by approx 6". You have plenty of space behind it, so might as well give yourself some clearance in the work area.

I love the new orientation of the island and think it does a lot for your layout ;)

I think you can put a dining table at the other end with benches on either side of that chimney, although I'm not sure that's the best use of your space. Other suggestions?

Thank you warmfridge, I cannot seam to get the pictures on the way you do! I think it a glitch with my computer! Yes our table will go on the other side... Not sure what shape table or if we gonna go with banquette.

Does the layout seem ok with the fridge where it is?

I would leave the fridge where it is. Since your LR and rest of the house are to the right, this gives the best access to the fridge for anyone just wanting something to drink. Otherwise, you'll have people constantly traversing the kitchen.

How about something like this? Similar to what you have, just a few tweaks & includes a table & benches. Note that b/c of the size of the chimney the benches will have to be built to fit.

Also, in the orientation of this layout...there's no wall on the "bottom", correct?

I can't thank you enough! It looks great the way you did it with the table and all the measurements... Strange question but for we were thinking of putting DW on left of sink since we are both lefties... Would that work?
Thank you again bc your illustration gave us clarity!!

Good diagram. I'm wondering if a MW drawer there is the most practical location given 3 children in the household. Maybe put the drawer in the other half of the island and face it towards the table, or move it next to the fridge, to help cut down on kid-traffic in your workspace. You can also put wider uppers next to the sink window if you feel you need the storage space (I would).

Moving the DW to the right of the sink will give you a larger door in the corner cabinet and better access to some super Susan's there. Will wait for some lefties to chime in about the mechanics of loading a DW on the right.
