Area Rug in Study Question - Pics Attached

Hi, I'm new to this site and have enjoyed reading the posts.

I'd like to get opinions on this 6' square rug in my study. Should it be larger, round or better with no rug at all? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated, thank you!

the rug is pretty, but wouldn't this interfere with your ability to move the chair in and out. Nice wall color!

Very pretty rug, but I would like to see it a lot larger in that space. Unless you decide to place the desk in the middle of the room centered on the rug facing the door. That might work and look great.

I would put some of the rug underneath the desk instead of in the middle of the room. It would look better and then you dont have the problem with your chair marking the floor or having problem pulling the chair out to sit down.

    I love the rug.
what is the wall color and where did you get that
    gorgeous rug?

I agree with cyn, the desk should be front and center facing the door. It's not the rug, it's the fact that the room is just boring with all the furniture up against the walls. Pull the desk out and it'll draw interest! You'll then be able to tell if the rug works.

Wow, thank you for all the responses!

If I try the rug partially under the desk, would that look ok with a large part of the floor then not covered as you enter? Or the rug would be just to anchor the desk rather than floating in the middle of the room?
Maybe have the desk and low shelf switch places? (thinking out loud here)

The rug came from Overstock, they recently had 15% off rugs plus additional 10%. And the paint color is BM Tyler Taupe - thank you so much for all your comments! I'm going to try moving furniture.

Not sure what the whole room looks like, or whether the back of the desk is finished so that it can be seen.

I would be inclined to turn the desk around so that it faced the other way. Take the bookcase that is below the Monet and put that on the wall where the desk is now, kind of like a credenza. Then the chair would sit with its back to that bookcase , and the desk would face into the room, with the rug under just the front 1/3 or so of the desk. Add a nice lamp on the bookcase.

Take the other bookcase that is on the right wall as you come in the room and put that below the Monet.

Then use the suitcase stack as a side table beside one comfy chair (or a chaise) that would sit on the wall to the right of the doorway, or between two chairs. Hang a lamp on the wall above the suitcases (a plug-in, wall lamp or sconce)

Would love to see some color up on the windows in the form of fabric valances, to help soften the look of the bright white blinds.

Do remember what the rug is called?

The rug is called "Handmade Mahal Beige New Zealand Wool Rug", with olive, ivory, rust and gold accents.

I've added a couple more pictures of the room - the tall shelf is too high for a picture to hang above it; there's a heating vent under the desk so low shelf would need to be a foot from the window.....how about the desk facing door from between windows OR just turning desk around where it is and moving more into the room and leaving the rest?

Thank you all again, these are great ideas!

If it were me, I wouldn't back it into the corner, but it might be ok where it is/180, bringing it out some. Any chance the tall bookcase can go on the wall we're not seeing, and then place a chair or 2 with small table where it is now, to face the desk. This would make a nicer view from the hall/room entry.

Can't really tell from pics if it would work, but have you tried turning the rug so it is at an angle (with the point of one corner going under the chair and front part of the desk? You could also turn the desk toward the door and have it sit on a corner of the angled rug (the rug left in center of room but angled to match the stacked suitcases).

I moved the desk under the picture and have it standing partially on the rug, and moved the short shelf under the window.

Didn't have the option of moving the tall bookcase to the wall you couldn't see, since its twin is on that wall. I've included a picture to see that angle. The room isn't that large so don't know if desk works in the middle of room with those large shelves on two walls.

I like this more than my first set up; I know everything is still against the walls but somehow it looks better to me.

I like you have the rug under the desk, looks much better than just having the rug in the centre of the room. Do you have a view outside your window...it is a shame to move the desk away from the window if you do. Even if you dont, I dont like desks that face the wall. I think the desk looked better under the window IMO.

I don't like desks that face the wall either, it's uncreative in function and looks that way too.

I had a similar desk in a small room at one time... how about leaving the desk where it is now, but turning it so that it's perpendicular to the wall (side of desk is next to wall, desk faces windows)? That's what I did in mine and it worked great!

I prefer the new arrangment. Funny, ALL my desks (two in my office and two in my home study) face walls, but they are very close to windows. This lets you look out of a window, but minimizes glare from the sun. At my work desks (where I am during the day), I find myself looking straight ahead if I am writing or reading or working on the computer. I tilt my head to the right or left to see the outside.
