You mean like "Old World Style"? I you are asking if people like it, put me down for a "No".

Its a 'little over the top' decorating-wise. It looks bulky. What size room is this going into? The black leather is a bit masculine.

It looks a bit claustraphobic to sleep in. I would have nightmares that the jaws are going to close and swallow me.

The only way I could picture bed working, is in an open floor plan, very sparse, urban industrial condo, - for a bachelor.

I like the first Durham you picked out. The new one has a LOT going on with it.

If I didn't have 4 cats I would buy something like that in a heartbeat. :)

dilly dally- you crack me up! Don't worry I won't let it get you! LOL

parm42- I love that bed, too but I really dislike the armoire.

I think I just really like the legs on these 2 beds, soooo I'll keep looking!
    Thanks for all your help!

You would have to have a very large room with tall ceiling to pull off the weight of this furniture. And make sure you place it where you want because I bet it is extremely difficult to move once in place.
I like the look although I tend to get simpler pieces for myself.

Wow, those are really grand pieces of furniture - as the other's have stated, you would need a very large and grand room otherwise it would look very odd. Sorry, I'm sure you will find something that you love, keep looking.

FYI As a child I had a padded headboard similar to this - but simpler, not so fancy. My experience is that all those buttoned areas collect a lot of dust and I had to constantly clean them out.

i think it's gorgeous, lol! that is, if it's long enough, i hate my feet hitting the end of the bed. it looks pretty comfy for reading in bed, i think. does it come in other colors? linky please?

Betlake, what was the other BR set you looked at? I do not remember seeing one posted. Maybe you could combine the sets if the wood is the same? Get the best of both worlds?

I did that with my BR "set". I found an unusual, almost MCM style, ash wood, sleigh bed I loved, but HATED the low, low wide dresser that it came with. Then I found the PERFECT high profile, sleek style, ash wood dresser but HATED the 'open trellis' style head board the set had. I combined them. I got the cool bed with the functional dresser. The woods match and no one has every commented that the legs don't match or that the furniture looks quirky together.

fallingwaters- here's the link. JCP has it marked down from $1200 to $899(King) $799(Queen)

I think the bed is to die for! Love the wood on the sides of it, just beautiful. But then again, that's the type of things I like. It's definitely me.

Well, I like statement pieces, and love the bed. You would have to let the bed be the center of attention, but it could be very old world, contemporary or very glam, depending on the bedding and colors. The armoire is nice (where I come from, nice is what you say when it's not bad enough to deserve "interesting":)) Like most sleigh beds, I would lay down in it before buying, so your feet don't hit the bottom. Otherwise, do you love it? Then it will fit in your room...
Too bad I a)already have a big bed and b)also have cats, I could go for it....

I don't care for the first one, though the second one is pretty. One caution, though: a friend has a sleigh bed and finds it VERY difficult to make, especially since she has a heavy mattress. Tucking in the bedding can be an exhausting process. My bed is much simpler, but even it can be difficult dealing with a footboard. If I had it to do over I'd probably consider getting a bed with headboard only, and maybe putting a light bench at the foot. It's much easier to make the bed that way.

Is anyone but me bothered by sleigh beds not being able to fit close to the wall?

Also, I like space around the bed and am thinking about getting a metal bed. Dh doesn't care one way or the other but since we've never had a footboard, he thinks we may get tired of the ritual of trying to make the bed look neat WITH one.

We're thinking about this bed...any thoughts on C&B quality?

OK, so you are not looking for just leathery sleigh beds with 'Old World Charm'? â

So I am assuming that you are looking for a sleigh bed with acorn feet? The Druham bed and the amoire with the leathery bed could work together nicely in a well acessorized room. It is hard to see the tiny amoire pic. Are they the same wood?

I like the Durham bed. It looks like a bed. Then the other two in the post progressivly morph to looking more and more like a Nordic sleigh until you would imagine getting to the final rendition of a sleigh bed and then to a real sleigh. LOL.

    âFunny

What features are you looking for in a sleigh bed? Do you want both the headboard and the footboard to be way high? Do you want them on feet? That would lend a light and airey feel to it. Do you want the siderails to come to the floor? Or do you want some space under the bed. I personally do not care for the heavy look of sleighbeds with the side to the floor. It's like having an ugly Captain's bed but without the useful storeage underneath. Plus they would be too difficult to clean under and the sides don't go ALL the way to the floor so that you would not have to clean under it at all. There is just enough room for dust and cat hair to flow under them and not be able to get a dustmop or vacuum under. I would hate to have my favorite lipstick roll under it to be gone until the day I move.

Love the Bed and the armoire, but not in a traditional BR.

MPWDMom asks about Crate and Barrel quality. I LOVE browsing in their stories and drool over their furniture, wish I could afford it. But I read an article a while back that was very critical of the quality of C&B, Pottery Barn, etc. See http://www.iconceptsllc.com/potterybarnUNSTUFFED.html

OTOH, since the Tribeca bed is metal, how bad could it be? I do think your husband's got a good point, though, about how difficult it would be to have bedding look neat with that footboard.

Lovesummer is absolutely right -- a bed with a footboard is a royal pain for changing the sheets and tucking in. It's true mattresses weight a ton today. It will get old by the end of the first month. I had an old brass bed and hated it for this reason.

That first bed is kind of like a Freudian couch turned into a bed. Hmmm... what does that say? ;-)

Hi lovesummer, thanks for that article! I guessed as much concerning quality, but then I know that even other makers (Ethan Allen, Thomasville, etc) are ALL lowering their quality standards.

I haven't bought any furniture from C&B, most recent things are solid maple/oak pieces we ordered from the unfinished place. I do like the C&B flatware (the pattern I like is made my Cambridge) if that counts for anything.

And yes, I think the Tribecca bed being all metal is a safer bet. I just wish delivery wasn't so high.

LOL. Having just read the LA Times "out" post before reading this I have to chuckle. That bed combines two of the "worst of 08" elements - sleigh beds and oversized leather club chairs. Gotta love the irony.

I actually kinda like the armoire but I don't think it goes with the bed at all. Unless you hjave a huge open space to work with I'd pass on that bed.

The one thing that I dislike about our current bed is that it's very uncomfortable to sit in it (has a silly shelf/dustcatcher thingy). That's something I've liked about sleigh beds.

Wow- Thanks everyone! I'll def. pass on the JCP bed, as Old World is not what I'm after.

dilly dally- You are a hoot! Now that's all I'm gonna be thinking about when I'm laying in my new sleigh bed...hook up the horses! LOL

Here's what I'd like to find with a sleigh bed...acorn feet, the footboard to be lower (yes, I need a footboard...had a headboard only before & I couldn't stand losing the covers through the night), siderails Not to come all the way down to the floor. Thanks for your help!

This is one of my dream beds. Unless we win the lottery, I'll probably never have it as it's Henredon.

The reason I'm posting it (besides loving to look at it) is because I wanted to show an example of what I percieve as being wrong with the JC Penny bed. Unless you are really going for ornate, I think it's best to just have one or two elements per piece. That bed had leather, and nail heads, and scrolling, and tufting...see where I'm going with this? :) Even though my Henredon bed has some of those features, in my mind, it's still calm.

To me, the more you pack into a piece of furniture, the less important each feature is. Then, with a bed, you might want a nice patterned comforter which would only add to the chaos.

Re: making the bed with a footboard, we have a footboard but it's a few inches further out than the mattress, so making the bed's not a problem at all. It must depend on the construction of the bed.

Betteratthelake, I really like the 2nd sleigh bed you posted. I think it would be fantastic in a traditional bedroom. I'm not crazy about the 1st one. It's too dark and overpowering IMO.

Thanks to all of you for your help!
And thanks to dilly dally for putting me on the right track by breaking down what I wanted in a sleigh bed. I think I have finally decided to go with this set from Universal Furniture.

It looks like a nice choice. Low footboard so that you can easily tuck in the quilt. Legs on feet for that lightweight feel and easy cleaning under. Big curvy headboard for drama. The lower foot board will make the room look more spacious too by not blocking any view across the room.

So many sleigh beds look like open luggage. This one looks refreshing. Nice choice.

    Nice. I really like it.

Love the bed parma posted!!! Definitely old world, but not over-the-top~so yesterday, according to the LA Times! ;o)
