I think I found a bargain!

I've been looking for wicker type dining chairs but they are sooo expensive (at least for my measly budget). I found some I liked in a magazine from last summer and went to the store to check them out and ......yahoo! they were on sale 60% off for $100 each.

I put a deposit down to hold them and am going to pick one up today to try. Fingers x'd they'll look good.

    Can't wait to see them.

Okay, I brought home two different styles - both on sale. Can I get honest opinions please? Have to decide by tomorrow.

Which one is more comfy for your height? AND for YOUR own legs to fit under the table? Will those chairs need a cushion?

Simple questions -- but ones that may impact your decision!

I do really really love both chairs -- the texture looks great in your room! I do choose the square one because it looks to be the right scale to fit under the table -- and still provide comfortable seating .....

I like the straight-backed one. I am all for mixing up different colors of wood in the same room, as well as different textures and materials, such as adding the wicker to your mostly otherwise wood scheme--however, I do think that the darker shade of the straight backed chair would just go better. Also, I think the straight back is more "appropriate" for a dining room, although what is or is not "appropriate" is highly subjective. I can better picture the lighter, rounded back chair in a sunroom.

Budge, good find!! Pier 1? My mom has the rounded ones...she also has the bar stools. I like them alot. She added it to an ancient and very beat up farm table - looks great.

I'll mix it up a little....I like the rounder back.

I spy a newly slip covered sofa!! Looks great from the back:)

Thanks anna and teacats. I really appreciate the advice. I really like both chairs but for different reasons.

The round chair has a tighter weave and the wicker just looks more durable. It also feels more solid when you sit in it. It is also a style that I had in mind from the beginning. But the light colour and lower back look a tiny bit off to me.

Teacats, they both have about the same dimensions and both are very comfy Altho the round one is a bit more comfortable, it is also a bit wider and two side by side at the table might be tight. I think there is enough room on either for a slim cushion if needed.

The square chair really looks better to me. The darker colour and higher back seem to anchor the dining end of the room and make it seem more dining -ish (as you pointed out anna). However the weave is quite open and the store display model had several wicker strands broken. In person it also looks a little cheaper and doesn't feel as solid/heavy as the round. The room is used by the kids a great deal and I worry how they will stand up.

Still can't decide. Any other opinions?

I like the round ones. I think the color of the straight-back chair is so close to the color of the wood on the table that there's not enough contrast. In the first picture, it struck me how I liked the lower, lighter chair better.

I really like a bit of wicker in these old houses! I think I like the darker color of the square one better, but in the end I would probably go with the other one if it seems more sturdy. I have an old wicker trunk that my 3-year-old is constantly picking pieces off of. ;)

johnatemp, yes they are Pier 1 . Your mom sounds like my kind of lady! The sofa is slipcovered - yay! I so love the slipcover. It changed the whole mood of the room.

Sheconquers, you are definately right about the colour. The lighter one has bits of the table colour in it, but the darker one is just a shade off of the table.

Bungalow house, gotta love the kids, but boy it does make decorating a much bigger process.

Waiting 'til dh gets home and see what he thinks. I'll let you know.

I like the contrast of the square chair with the oval table. I also think the color & height of the back on the square chair is more attractive with the table.

That being said, you couldn't go wrong with either!

I like the darker square ones! It may just be your camera angle, but the rounded one looks too short. Perhaps seeing it from a different angle or someone seated in it might help since you say it is more comfortable, though and you like the style.

Okay, one more question. The round one is a full 3 inches wider than the square. Still plenty of room for two on each side. The square is 16" wide. How would you think of this for comfort? We have always had the small antique oak chairs or smaller chairs. Is the wider seat going to be alot better for bigger friends (we are sort of average sized family and extended family) and just generally more comfortable even for smaller folk?. Or is it better to have a narrower seat so there is more room between chairs?

What about two dark ones at head of table and round ones on the side?

Anything to get out of making a decision ;-)

I love both wicker chairs a lot. If they had both the same comfort level and sturdiness, I would choose the darker chairs since they go better. If the more round chairs are more comfortable, you can always add a few pieces of other wicker items that match the lighter chairs like a wicker napkin holder to make them go better. You can even spray paint the lighter chairs I would think. I love wicker and have wicker/solid beach wood chairs in my kitchen that I bought from Ethan Allan over 10 years ago and still love.

I like the darker, square ones, too, although both are great looking!

The wicker looks great w/ your furniture - super mix. I like the rounded back one, however, I think that the back is too low. All of the furniture is almost creating one horizontal line across the room. Guess that's not a problem though since the square backed ones look great too!

I'm with budge...round on the sides and square on the ends.

That aside, I'm leaning now toward the round. Originally thought square due to height, color, etc., but a 2nd look had me envisioning six round ones.

I'd put a table runner or cloth...you need fabrics in this room...to tie the browns to the lighter color of the round chairs. Pick round. I like 'em and I think you do too!

I actually had the square ones and they look just wonderful.
Our chairs were used daily and over time they started to sag in the seat. To make them more comfortable we bought seat cushions. The problem with the square one, is there is no way to attach a seat cushion, so they were constantly falling on the floor.

DH was very happy when I suggested replacing them.
I still love the look! Turn the chairs over and look at the construction before making your decision.

I really like the darker, square chairs in your room!

I like the round, seagrass ones. The do look more sturdy and comfortable. Your dining room does not seem so formal as to make these look out of place. JMO. :)

I like the tall square ones.

My vote goes to the taller rectangular chair. It mimicks your windows and gives presence to the table. The smaller chairs seem to be too subtle. The taller chair will also give you more options if you dress your table for a more formal occasion IMO. HTH! (I have the urge to run to Pier 1 right now!)

I like both styles and colors, but prefer the height of the square back chairs with your table.

Another vote for the taller rectangular chair.

The tall dark chair suits the room so well. I think the round chair gets a little lost.

Okay, consensus is that the dark ones look best, but light ones are okay too. The construction of the light ones is better, but hey they're cheap chairs, I can replace them in 5 yrs if need be.

I usually do have a tablecloth on the table so the colour not working with the table is not too big a deal. I think I better get the dark ones. I just love the light ones so much. My DH freaked when I said maybe I would just buy 2 of the round ones just to have 'cause I love ' em so much. I already have a monstrous collection of antique chairs in the basement that are not really useable because they all need reworking.

    can't answer . . . . halfway out the door to Pier 1 . . . .

Hi budge - I've already given my opinion, but I will say that in that room - I don't like the smaller, lighter chairs at all. I do like them, but not in that space. :)

Hey Budge, good for you! I love bargains, if it's something I wanted anyway. That said, I like the straight backed ones (darker stain) much more than the others...they look richer to me. And I'd stick with the same ones all around the table. Have fun! : )

    Oh, I am hopeless.

I went and picked up the fabric swatch the upholstered living room chairs will be and realized the chairs in the dining room do need to be darker (as so many of you said). Then went to a small shop near us that has wicker and found the perfect dark wicker square back dining chair - absolutely to die for - but of course $270 each. Not going to pay that since the kids use this area alot, but got me thinking that maybe I should keep looking ...

or maybe just buy the cheap one for now and 5 yrs down the line get something better quality. Like I said, hopeless.

On the bright side, I found a striped tablecloth that has the EXACT colours of the floral upholstered chairs and it was severely inexpensive. Bought some matching napkins to make pillows out of for the chairs.Yay!!

Thanks so much to everyone for your opinions. I will let you know what we decide and post pix (but don't be surprised if I end up with some of each - but that wouldn't really be decision making would it?)

I hve no idea if this is possible, but could you put some kind of stain on the lighter chair to mkae it darker?

Straitlover, if it was just me, that is exactly what I would do, but my DH would have a fit if I started that with brand new chairs. Thanks for the suggestion tho.

I went back yesterday and bought 6 of the dark ones. I had to let the others go even tho I liked them so much. I'll post pics when I get them home. We have a small car so it will mean several trips over a few days.
