My son LOVED Thomas until he was about 5 or 6. His interest started to wane in kindergarten.

You know, they're only little once. If you love doing it then, why not? You could also paint the character faces on large artists canvases which will make them easier to work on and easier to change out later.

My now 8 year old granddaughter was nuts about Thomas until she was about 6, my 3 now 5 year old grandsons were only mildly interested in Thomas and now don't care about him at all.

But if your son still loves him, go for it!

Thomas lasted until maybe Kindergarten for my son. Like, 2 months after we bought miles of wooden tracks, I think! Then it was quickly on to anything involving a ball... basketball, soccer, football, baseball... Now he's 12 and also into music so the team logo posters and banners have to share wall space with the band posters. It seems like his room has evolved pretty quickly!

I love dawnp's idea of painting the character faces on artist canvases. They'll be easier to paint that way (can set on an angle or flat), and of course easier to move around or remove. You can also easily let him do one of his own that way, of Thomas, or his hand prints, or whatever.

I have really enjoyed working on the kids' rooms with them, and it sounds like you will too! Have fun!

My son was little when Thomas originally came out; for one birthday I painted a custom shirt for him; drawing all the trains around the shirt. We didn't do Thomas bedding but did a train one from Sears. He played with his Thomas trains up until maybe 10; could be longer because my nephew loved coming over & playing too. We still have all the original trains; the kids that come over love playing with them.

I'm not sure I'd paint Thomas on the walls; just regular trains. When he grows out of it; you do something else; or add planes to it like we did.

my boys all loved thomas... but i think my youngest stopped playing with pretty much when he was about 5-6...my oldest and middle played longer, probably because they had younger sibs who played/loved it still.

they def didn't play so much with the trains when their friends came over much past 5-6...for some reason they played with matchbox type cars much longer...it always amazed me how much they played with those matchbox cars!!

My son lost interest in Thomas a couple of months ago - he's five, but my three year old duaghter picked up where he left off :-)

little sidetrack note here (no pun intended). Have you ever seen a shelf that is mounted up really high, all the way around the room, with train tracks on it? And the train can circle the room???

My son also loved Thomas. I was sad to see this phase end,as Thomas is truly adorable, but glad to make another child very happy when the train and accessories were passed on :)

Yes consider a track up high and find a vintage Lionel train set also. That will last longer than what appears to be 6 yrs. Probably your DH and his friends will be in the room too. Even big boys like trains.

My son was around 5 when his interest in Thomas started to wane, although once in a while he will pull out the trains and play with them (he will be 7 in a few weeks).

My grandson loooooved Thomas, until before he was 5, like the others. They converted his Thomas track table to a lego table.

Don't have a boy...I have a girl. As others said, about the time they go to Kindergarten is the time they get quality time with other kids, get exposed to newer ideas, and take interests into things other than they've been used to.

My oldest lost interest at 5 (total nut) and my middle lost interest at age 4 but while he did love Thomas he never loved as much as my oldest.

Sounds like I have about a year or less with Thomas (he's five but a late birthday so kindergarten is next year) so I think I'll just do a mix of the murals and the Alaska train pics on the other walls and bathroom then transition into that....and lol bee....yes I have seen the train around the room and was planning on that for step two (with lionels) with the older child train focus :) cuz yes...big boys live those two. I'm currently challenged by an added closet and transom windows As well as ten foot ceilings so I'm holding off and whipping out a quick Thomas lol.

Our contractor is a train buff and he's dying to do the project :). I may tease him until he offers to do it for free (apparently his wife said no to the idea in their dining room lol).

igloo, my DH still loves trains and we have even seen outdoor set ups. They are great around the Christmas Tree too.

I was going to post this exact question to my moms' group. My 4 yr old and 2 yr old are sharing a room. They are suddenly into trains and my 2 yr old LOVES Thomas. 4 year old thinks he ok, but doesn't go crazy or anything. I was thinking about getting the RoomMates Peel & Stick border or mural or something and Thomas sheets with a solid comforter. That way it's definitely themed, but not terribly permanent.

For the record, those train faces creep me out.

Groovy....do a search for jay jay the jet plane....this faces really creep me out! Thomas has nothing on them!

My oldest Grandson loved Thomas and I painted a huge mural on his wall that took up pretty much a 10ft. wall. It lasted until he was about 9 and then they painted over it, because he had finally outgrown it. : (
My DD and he cried as they painted over it, but they did take lots of pictures before it went away.
