Kitchen Appliance Layout

Hi! This is my first post here. We just went into contract last week to build our dream house, and now we need to get serious about cabinet choices. My husband and I have 3 young children (3.5 years, 1.5 years, and 6 weeks), and we plan to live in our house until we're unable to go up and down stairs! We do a lot of cooking and baking, and I really love having my kids "help" me in the kitchen.

Below is the kitchen designer's first take at our kitchen. I'm not really sold on it because I feel like the fridge is far away from the sink. Plus, if my kids are sitting at the island I will have no place to put down hot items from the micowave or ovens.

The appliances I want included in our kitchen.

- 2 full sized ovens

- 36" cooktop

- microwave

- fridge

- dishwasher

I don't have a preference over a plain cooktop vs a range or a microwave above or below the counter. I'm leaning toward putting the microwave in the island. In case it matters, we're hoping to do a farmhouse apron sink.

I would love to get some opinions and suggestions. I'm very open to new ideas. Thanks so much!

I'm new here, too, and have kids spaced similarly to yours, although about a year older in all three instances!

Our plans are somewhat similar as well (location of fridge, MW and range). However, our single wall oven will be to the right of where your range is and our sink is in the island. My baking center (long counter top with cabinets underneath) is next to the fridge. If you were to move your ovens nearer the range, you'd have a bit of counter space where your sink is currently located as well as giving you some counter space near your microwave to put hot things down on.

    Just some thoughts!

It appears the MW is in the space between the refrigerator and double ovens. Place the MW in the island because you need a landing zone for hot items out of oven and also the refrigerator. The refrigerator is a good spot to me because it is easily accessed for those not cooking and those cooking. Consider adding a refrigerator drawer in the island. We plan to add one with butter, eggs, milk that are staples for baking. Plus fruit and drinks for the grandkids.

Congratulations on the babies! You have your hands full!!!

I thought it looked like a very nice layout, until I read your concern and caught on that that was an island. Yeah, seems like a bit of a "barrier island" alright...
What is to the right (on the overhead view) of the kitchen? Could you reduce the island size, turn it sideways, and move it a bit to the right?

Thank you so much for your opinions!

jodi~ Glad to hear you've survived a year beyond where we are! It's pretty crazy right now. LOL!

Angie- I'll attach another picture to show more of the house layout. Unfortunately we really can't turn the island. We discussed it during the floor plan design process, and it just isn't realistic in the budget to bump out the kitchen any further. We really like the idea of a large island.

The picture below has the appliances placed where the architect suggested them be placed. I kind of prefer these locations. However, I really like the look of the rangetop wall without the ovens. So maybe appliances like this but with the wall ovens on the same wall as the fridge and a small counter space in between? Move MW to island.

How large is your kitchen? It's really hard to give lay-out suggestions without knowing its dimensions. My best guess is that it's about 16' top to bottom and perhaps 12' side to side but I hate to go by what could easily be inaccurate estimates.

But here's an idea anyway. Have you considered moving the fridge to the right of the DW? Then the oven wall could be your baking center. It looks like you have enough room to do that and that would eliminate your concern about the fridge being so far from the sink.

Thanks Lisa! The dimensions are about 16x13', so you were pretty close. I hadn't thought about moving the fridge at all. I'll have to mull over that one. It's great to have all these options, but it gets confusing fast.

I like the idea of the microwave moved to the island to have a landing zone on that wall. Having the fridge so far from the sink with the island in between would bother me a lot. I agree with Lisa that it might work better on the other side if you have room.
