lighting style? - with pics

I am putting this pendant light over my sink. It's more silver IRL then it shows in the picture (it's mercury glass). I believe the cup at the top of the glass where the cord connects is a darker pewter and the cord is fabric.

I wanted something simple for over the kitchen table (eat in kitchen). Something like this.

The ceiling height over the sink is 9' and over the table it's only 8', so I can't have something that will hang too low.

I don't have any good pictures of the kitchen table area, but it's basically where I'm standing taking this picture(I'll try to get one tonight). Here's the sink area.

Since I won't have a ton of room between the ceiling and the table I can't have anything that hangs too low.

I don't want a flush mount, semi-flush might work as long as it's not a frosted flat bowl.

I'd rather it not have frosted glass at all.

I like seeded or textured glass.

I'd prefer something hanging.

I don't think I'd like schoolhouse style fixtures in this kitchen.

I'm not really a fan of stained/tiffany glass either.

I don't like crystals.

I think anything that has a lot of swoops and swirls won't look right but I'm not a huge fan of super straight rigid lines.

I have no problem introducing another finish as long as it's not too shiny (no high shine brass or chrome).

I know it sounds like I'm really limiting my potential choices, but I just want to see what others might think would look good (even if it's something I said I didn't want, post it anyway). I want to make sure I've looked at all the options before deciding. Price will be a factor, but like I said, I'd still want to see it, if for no other reason to see if I like the style and could maybe find something similar but less expensive.

This is the last peice to my kitchen puzzle. Everything else I picked I think goes together really well, I just don't want to mess this last piece up.

If you have any ideas I'd love to see them!!

Thanks in advance.

I love your sink pendant, and I think it goes beautifully in your kitchen! I think you are on track with your table chandelier, however you may want to think about how much light you will get from candelabra bulbs. I changed my chandelier to regular bulbs to get better light.

I like the one in the link because it has a mirrored shade. You can customize the length of this fixture and you may be able to have them put in a single chain link between the canopy and rod as a stress breaker so it hangs rather than having a rigid rod.

Its expensive, and its like your over the sink light on crack but I thought I would show it to you. It can be ordered so that it doesn't hang down so far

Thanks kerrys, that's a good point. We have 6 4" recessed light in the main kitchen and 2 in the eat-in part. (either side of the chandelier spot). They will be on a dimmer but that's not hooked up right now. Those are the only lights we have right now and there is a lot of light in there at night, but since we're not eating in there right now it's hard to say if it's enough.

bostonpam - Thanks! The light is frm pottery barn but unfortunately it's been dicontinued. I made my mind up a few days too late and I quickly became obsessed with that light. I could find nothing else like it. Luckily a lovely GW member had 3 for sale and I was lucky enough to snag one before she sold the other 3 on ebay. There are some other awesome mercury glass lights out there, but none had the streaks that this one has. I hope you can find something you like. it's so freaking difficult!

palimpsest, that first light is pretty cool but that second one blew my mind! haha, I don't think I could talk DH into a $500 light but I may keep it on the back burner.
    Thanks!

Andrea! Your kitchen looks awesome! I know you are thrilled!!
I have the 6 arm Talia Chandelier from Ballard Designs and I love it, but it might be too big for your table.
Anywho...here is the link. You could add chandelier shades to dress it up a bit, but mine are bare.

Hey Lisa, thanks!! Everything is coming along awesomely :)
That's a really cool chandelier. I'll add it to the list of considerations, thanks!
Are you in your house yet?

Wow! Check out these mercury glass shades on Ballard. If you put those on the chaandelier you've already picked out, I think you'd have a winner.

    Good luck!

How big of a fixture can your space handle... ? ... how wide of a fixture? also, how much light do you need (wattage?)

I have the Armonk Chandelier from PB. While it has six candelabra bulbs, we had to get a dimmer for that room because it was too bright! :) I mention it because it's similar in style to the one you put in your OP. The smaller Armonk might work for your space.... ( http://www.potterybarn.com/products/armonk-small-chandelier/?pkey=call-chandeliers-pendants ) It could be too small, though, for what you need. I have this one in my entryway.

Something you might want to think about is glare from exposed bulbs like your example, since your chandelier/semi-flush will be relatively close to the table/your head level.....

holy crap lolab, that might be the coolest shade I've ever seen!!! :-D I didn't even think about seraching for just chandelier shades with mercury glass. That would make the whole light about $175 I think. That's not too shabby! This might the winner!!

SO pretty! Please posts pics once you get it installed!

LOVE all the Talia chandy, and the mercury glass pendants---it will look beautiful in your kitchen!

Awesome kitchen! Looks so rich, and the hardware is just perfect! Can't wait to see it once it's all done!

Just another thought that kind of mimics the look of the Orbit 8 that palimpset posted is the firefly from cb2, it's a linear set of drop pendants for $199.

We are in the house--moved in the weekend of the 28th. Still unpacking and trying to figure out where everything goes!
Good luck with your last decisions---sometimes they are the hardest!! :0)

lolauren, excellent questions! I think once I post my pictures it might help everyone get a sense of the space. I've never purchased light fixtures before so I'm having a hard time imagining the scale (I think a mock up might be in order). It's also hard to imagine since we don't have the kitchen table yet, although we have a small one we'll be using temporarily. I'll be putting that in there in the next 2 weeks or so. But using my best guess I'd say we can probably work with anything less then 24" wide and preferably 18" high since we're working on the assumption the bottom of the light will be about 5' off the floor, leaving 18" of cord. I just hope that won't look to weird.

The light will be on a dimmer. The cans that are on either side plus in the main kitchen will also be on a dimmer (on their own swtich). The pendant will be on it's own switch, no dimmer.

The glare is something I'm having a hard time figuring out and maybe once the space is finished we'll have a better sense of what that effect will be like. I like the idea of a shade on the chandelier, and I'm really loving the ones that lolab posted. I am having a hard time figuring out if I want/need uplights or downlights. I think the shades give me the best of both worlds :)
I have seen the chandelier that you've posted and I really do like it. It's a definite contender. Thanks!

Thank you michellemarie and jillsee :)

Brickton, I don't think I can do a linear pendant since we have the recessed lights on either side and there's not a ton of space between the ceailing fixture box and the edge of the header that separates the eat in kitchen part form the main kitchen. But I do like those rounded shades, those are cool!

That's awesome Lisa!! You'll have to let me know when you post final pictures in case I miss it. I hope you love your new home!! the little details are definitely the hardest!

You definitely should do a mock up. I had a hard time visualizing chandeliers in my home and had to make something that was the same size (lots of paper and tape.... very basic, but it worked) :) it helped me a lot.

WOW - this is making me a mercury glass fan. I remember seeing Amberley's and loving it. Your pendent is so pretty. Maybe more will show up on ebay.

Sorry these pics are dark, I took them when I got home from work last night, and please excuse the mess! :)

You can see the 2 recessed lights and the ceiling fixture box centered between them in the lower ceiling area. We'll be doing a banquette style bench against the casement windows so the table will be parallel to the back wall.

In this picture you can see the sink in relation to the table area (again, excuse the mess)

And just so all the ideas are in the same spot to make things easier, here's the pendant for over the sink

Here's the shade that I'd like to use for the chandelier

This is the 1st chandelier I posted (about $60)

And then I found this one that I think I like a little better but it's about $40 more expensive, so I don't know if I like it that much more.

I'll work on a mock up tonight and see if that changes anything.

prill, I spent the better part of the morning trying to find a picture of Amberley's kitchen. I just discovered that she hadn't posted finished pictures yet but I did find her mercury light pictuer, that's a beauty! I'll just sit tight and see what her pendants look like in her space she she's finished :)

sometimes I really wish DH wouldn't look at the computer over my shoulder
    ::said tongue in cheek::

He noticed that the shade can only be used with 25W max bulbs. That depresses me as I really REALLY loved them. I have no idea what 25 W candle bulbs look like but something tells me that's not enough light.

GAH! Back to the drawing board.

I've never seen a hanging light (chandelier or pendant) that you couldn't adjust the length of the support chain. But since 8' ceilings are pretty much standard I'd think it would be designed for that.

Each bulb 25W? That should be fine, I would think, for over a table. You have your recessed lights in there also. I really think you will be fine, since it isn't task lighting, just ambient eating light.

well I'm just going to have to take a break from this whole subject for a while I think. I was looking at the shade again this morning to try to get ideas for other things to google and I noticed that it says "not available to be shipped until 7/2011" . The 25 W max has me a bit freaked out but I was also researching CFLs for candelbra chandeliers and it appears that could be a solution to the wattage restriction. But loosk liek I'll have to wait to see.

I'm fairly certain that I'm going to order the 3 arm style of the last photo I posted if I can find it. I found a brushed nickel verison that's only $30 so I'm thinking even if I by that and spray paint it it'll still be way cheaper then any thing else I can find and I can revisit the shade idea down the line.

Thank you all for helping me with ideas and solutions to my issues. I really appreciate it! And if anyone happens upon any other cool mercury glass candelabra shades, just let me know, ok?? :) Thanks!

If you use non-incandescant lighting, you will get more light from 25W. You may want to consider LED bulbs - instant on, long life, low power consumption, may be dimmable. Downside - cost.

CFLs are also an option, but they take some time to warm up, are generally non dimmable and tend to be bulkier due to the electronic ballast. They also do not do well in situations where the light is turned on/ off in rapid succession.

Thank you for the adviced davidtay. I have a lot more research to do for this chandelier.
    The chandilier will be dimmable.
I did find dimmable candlebra base CFLs online, but other then that I have no idea how they work.
The shade style I like says "clip on" but I really have no idea if they will clip onto CFL bulbs. I will look at LEDs. I won't mind spending the money upfront if they'll work, look right and last a long time.
