Final Check Before Cabinet Order

Well, who would have thought that I am actually going ahead with my kitchen renovation. We are set to order next week but I am not that happy with the coffee bar/MW/fridge area and wondered if you guys could help.

The sink as shown is just too prominent. We are planning on using a sink with a width of 15'' or so.

Here are two ideas:

1) Move the sink to the corner and use a square or round sink. This would mean 2 x 24 drawer cabinets along the coffee bar wall, the sink base and then as you round the corner, the dead side of the sink base, a pullout trash and a 27'' drawer cabinet under the MW. This would make the sink easily accessible from each side but there is no wall behind the sink and I am worried about the splash.

2) Leave the sink where it is but move it over to the far right of the cabinet it is in or use an 18'' cabinet. This would allow the wall to still be in back of the sink. The plan shows an 18'' drawer stack as shown, a 29'' sink base with the sink off center, a drawer stack opening on the MW side, the pullout trash and then the 27'' drawer stack under the MW. This version also puts the other drawer stack on the MW side which I think I want.

I want to just ignore the upper cabinet layout on that side of the kitchen for now until I get the rest figured out. I hope this makes sense. I will have a temporary movable island until I can afford the island I want.

I haven't been following your plans so I may be way off, but I like it where it is for a coffee bar. WOuld it be less prominent if you had drawers under it? They wouldn't be great drawers, but they'd sort of blend in the cabinet. And of course the side of the MW-facing cabinet can be fake drawers as well. Or, anyway, do something to make that little row of cabinets look more uniform.

Now I'm feeling pressured! I have been talking about ordering my cabinets since last summer and at that time I thought we would end up on the same timeframe--I guess we might yet since I'm hoping to get my order in next week also (really)!

Okay, now to your point. I wonder why you need such a large sink base with a 15" sink. I'm thinking the sink base is probably what is too prominent, (too much like the main sink I think) or maybe it is the angle of the view. I'd like to see it in context with the rest of the room. Do you have your layout posted elsewhere that would include where your island will be placed?

As it looks right now, if you move the sink to the corner I do think it becomes more functional and I like that the trash would be close. Also, if this were left as is would you be planning anything on the end panel (the dead side)? I was thinking a faux door or drawer stack to mimic the other side might work (or would it just confuse things).

Please understand I have to walk and talk through ideas, good and bad so I'm not the least bit offended if you hate any idea I come up with.

I'll race ya to the start!

Thanks fori. I am glad you like it. No one has seen this plan because it was covered in dust. We were supposed to go forward last Spring, then last Fall. I am kind of not really believing it is going to happen.

I was thinking that I would just use a smaller sink base. Maybe make it all even along the coffee bar wall, basically all 24'' cabinets. Not taking up the whole sink cabinet with a big sink will give me more counter space.

LOL! missstella. No way to offend me with your ideas. I think my original IKEA plans are from 2008. ;)

Here is another pic with the other wall.

The island is basically going to be 3'x6' and run parallel to the main sink wall. I ran out of funds and I actually want to live in the space for a while before I really decide. I am going to purchase a 30'' x 72'' stainless steel work table with a shelf. It is an inexpensive solution and will give me a table I can later use elsewhere in the house.

Don't laugh, my original plans were from 2005. We started planning when we bought the house, but decided that we needed to live in it first. I'm glad we did, but getting started back up has been a process. I do still have my original magazine inspiration from a 2005 magazine that is no longer in publication. I think I will actually be glad to clear out some of the old old magazines that have cluttered my thinking over the last five years. (OMG it's six now)

You know I think the sink needs to move to the corner so that when you have an island, and even before, the sink can do double duty...For coffee and as extra help in the kitchen, as needed. I like it when things can offer you more than one use in more than one situation. Where it is, it probably won't be that handy for adding a splash of water to veggies you're steaming in the microwave, or for draining same veggies. What about an extra hand washing spot for kitchen helpers or to aid in a baking project taking place on the work table. Any auxiliary activities in the kitchen could take place on the counter by the mw and on the work table, and it'd be a lot nicer to be able to reach that sink from that same aisle.

I think DH really wants it on the corner. I was just worried about not having a wall behind it. I found a cute stainless round one on mrdirect that is undermount or self-rimming. That gives me the flexibility of the cast iron ones you found the other day. Those are still in the running as well.

What do you think of the wall cabinets if the sink moves to the corner? I just cannot get them pictured in my mind. You know me, I would be happy with a mix of shelves and cabinets.

I think that blank cabinet side is what is throwing everything off. Even if you move the sink to the corner, which would be more convenient to the trash, put false drawer fronts on that side to balance it.

    Gotcha on the door fronts.

I don't think the cabinets are a problem on the corner, as is. I suppose you could run uppers to the end of each wall and span across (over the sink area) with triangle shaped shelves...Hope that makes sense.

Odie--Check out this thread with a picture of buehl's prep sink. It might work well in the corner. I like the look of a round sink, but I'm not sure it would be practical with the bowls, strainers, etc. I use when prepping. Although I will not have a prep sink in my new kitchen so my knowledge/research is limited.

Here is a link that might be useful: faucet link with beuhl's prep sink

What a great sink for the corner missstella. You have quite a memory to remember that sink. Off for more research.

I have one more question. In the corner between the range and main sink, should I just use some shelves instead of an open cabinet? Something is telling me to stick to thick painted shelves, or stainless shelves. I don't know whether to do straight shelves or ''L'' shaped.

Getting closer I guess. I still cannot really believe we are moving forward.

Other parts of the drawing that you have showed to us that make the sink look prominent: the tall arched faucet and the upper cabinets starting higher to make room for the tall faucet. So if you make a drawing with a corner sink, you may also want to keep the upper cabinet line at the same level everywhere, and draw in a low-profile faucet.
Those are the parts that drew my eye first, not the base cabinets.

Great advice. I asked him to redraw it with the sink on the corner and all cabinets at the same height.

Our existing cabinets are only about 15'' off of the counter. It is hard to imagine what a couple of extra inches will feel like.

I ditched the corner cabinet between the range and sink walls. I just want shelves. I can always have a cabinet made if I don't like it.

    Thanks for everything guys.
