help with kitchen design

Can anyone come up with a better design for this kitchen? I am concerned about the placement of the frig but can't figure out where else to put it and still have counter space.

Hi there, could you please tell me what program did you use, to design the kitchen? Thanks!

The plan was given to me by my cabinet person. I don't have the name of the program.

It looks like 2020 Design, a professional cabinet dealer software.

Okay, I'll jump! Keep in mind I am recommending this plan only because you wanted a suggestion for another spot for the refrigerator. I can envision the refrigerator on the other side of the room and away from the entry door. However, and this is a major "however"! Certain other changes, the most important of which is changing out your range for a cook top and single oven, would have to be made. So it might cost a bit more. At the same time it could also finesse your work triangle so there are less steps for the cook. And you could easily if you prefer have a gas cooktop and an electric oven. It would also give you space to have a built in microwave above the oven. If you like to entertain or bake a lot, you would have space for double ovens, which certainly comes in handy for the person who loves being in her beautiful new kitchen...cooking.

    1) Change out the range for a cooktop and a separate single oven. (simplest, least expensive but as above, does not address a microwave which I admit I do not see in your kitchen to begin with. It might be in the plan but I cannot read your plan).
    2) Put the oven where the refrigerator is now.
3.) Trade places and put the sink where the range is.
4.) Put the cooktop on the island. Venting for the cooktop will now be island venting. I'm not sure if you have a vent now. It looks like the under-cabinet type if it's there. A good venting system is always an added plus.
4.) Put dish washer on left-hand side of the sink. You will have narrower drawers but will retain countertop space.
5.) The refrigerator works best at the end of a cabinet run. In your kitchen I can see it to the right of your sink. It appears you would still have 12 or 15 inches for a landing zone next to the fridge. Of course you can use the island for bringing in/placing groceries, etc.

That's at least a start so go get your thinking cap on, and good luck, madeline

Is there a way to enlarge the 'measurement' image?

Thanks of the input. I am working with a local builder and don't have digital plans but here is a pic of the kitchen great room area I am working with. the door by the frig goes to the laundry room and then the garage. The pocket door leads to the guest wing. there is a pantry area in the laundry room. We are extending the island counter so stools can be added but it will not be raised. The microwave is planned to be above the range. Haven't heard good things about the counter venting for cooktops and the ceiling is so high I didn't want a hood so that's why I nixed the island cooktop. I am downsizing from a kitchen about twice this size so the more ideas for an efficient kitchen the better. I am not locked into anything yet except the space.

If you plan to vent with a microwave above the range I doubt you'll hear good things about that method either. I will think some more on your plan if I can read it. Take care, madeline

I would go with the great corner range suggestions from Aggie!
Move your range to the corner, put the refrigerator at the end of the long cabinet run, put a large pantry where you have the refrigerator planned currently, and keep your sink on the island. Super effecient, and with plenty of counter space! It also allows you to have a range hood which IMO is a must....not for beauty, but absolute function.
Could also move your range far left toward the corner, and put your refrigerator at far right end, pantry where refrigerator is currently planned. This, however, will give you the feeling of a little less counterspace.

I think you need to hire a kitchen designer, I can see immediately that by first off aligning a wall that's to the left of the fridge, with the one across the room, you will get a more defined space, then by extending that wall and turning the fridge, adding a drop spot counter, will make a huge difference in this layout, the island would be thinner and could have seating at the end and only. This could be an awesome design or it can be hacked. You need to decide on your appliance needs, a microwave over range will be 30"w and will limit your range choice. Maybe you need a 36" range, or 36" Range top and Double Ovens, or 48" Range.. These are all decisions you need to make with an experienced designer. And even if the builder thinks she knows best, and it may very well be that the builder is also a talented designer, this is your money being spent on something that doesn't quite work.
