Help With Paint/Decorating *Pics*

In a few weeks are finally getting rid of the hideous blue carpet in my living room and dining room and I figured since we are getting new floors I might as well paint the dining room. I know most of my husband and my family don't care for what the previous owners did but I like it and I would gladly keep it but there are a couple holes that need to be repaired and the normal wear and tear and since there's no way I could do what they did I'm going to have to pick a solid new color. It's a little harder to pick colors though because our home is so open and I'd like it to sort of flow.

Picture of the kitchen and at the end is the dining room.

Close up of the kitchen wall.

This is looking at the dining room from the living room. The kitchen is on the right and the foyer. Yes I know we need a new chandelier, we're think of getting a brass one. Also I'm thinking of replacing the aniaml prints with pretty flower paintings and putting like a half table with a vase on the small wall. I really want a centerpiece for the table but I don't know what.

This is looking at the living room from the dining room. Yes I know I have horrible decorating skills. I literally go into a decorating store look around until I start crying and then leave, hence why my husbands dead animals occupy the wall. Also the table widens from the middle and it's real pretty but I don't know if it would make the room look smaller.

Oh my. I am with the others who are hoping to see the sponge painting go. The colors used have too much contrast and make it look dirty. Newer faux painting techniques are much more subtle.

One thing I notice is your swag valances hang down very low. They look a little lazy. I'd pull them up higher which would look neater. It is nice to let them drop a little in the middle, but these seem exaggerated.

What color/material will the floors be? Without knowing, I'd vote for a lighter green paint than what is on your wall in the living room. I'd use that strip and go 2 shades lighter.

Hi Miss Trapper! The biggest question, is why does going into a store make you cry? Are you too overwhelmed by the choices? Do you not like any of it, so feel like you're settling? Do you just feel like you have no confidence to actually pull off the look you want?

Looking at your pictures, I have a lot of ideas and suggestions, but it would be helpful to know what your goals for the rooms are, besides paint and flooring. What will the new flooring look like? What style do you like or want for the room -country, traditional, formal, casual? What is your budget for the rooms? What things have to stay, and what can go? Are you doing these things yourself, or will you be paying for labor/installation? What are the needs of your family for these rooms? Do you have young children and/or pets?

I'm sure others will have lots of ideas, too, so the more information that you can give, the better the suggestions will be.

I like the color of the trim so the hardwood will probably be close to that same color.
I get very overwhelmed when I try buying decorations. It takes me forever to try and figure out if it would look good and finally when I do pull the trigger I get home a see it doesn't match. I truly wish I could just pay someone for a day to come with me shopping or better yet give them money to go buy stuff for me but I live in upper Wisconsin where stylist are un-heard of and to get one from a big city would take half my savings, so I'm making this journey alone.
For style I would say more country/casual. I'm only 23 (my husband 30) we're both very outdoors, laidback, and we're expecting our first child in July so anything formal would make us very uncomfortable.

Country/casual? You are almost there! Here's what I'd do...
"Lighter green paint than what is on your wall in the living room. I'd use that strip and go 2 shades lighter." Ditto~~~
Remove the swag valances and just have your cream panels.
Can you shop for a few print pillows for the LR too? :)

Congrats on the house and an upcoming baby~~~

Here's the thing about buying things for the walls or things to go on the table or lamps, or whatever. Buy what you love, and it'll work. Sure, you need to keep in mind the size and scale of things, so try and have an idea about that first.

Say you decide to hang a picture in the dining room. Take some other artwork from what you already have, and see what they look like in that spot. Do you need something bigger or smaller? Do you need a simple frame, or something more ornate? That gives you an idea about what general size to look for, then just go shopping and buy something you like in that general size. Don't be as concerned with "I need a blue thing." Does that make sense?

For your windows, have you thought about blinds instead of curtains? JC Penney sometimes has their ready-made blinds on sale for $20, any size. I just hung a set, and was really happy with the quality.

For that dining room, when the floors are in, are you planning to add a rug under the table? Or change out the drapes? I'd choose a rug or tablecloth, or chair pads, or something, and then choose a paint color from that. You could always pick a neutral tan/beige whatever, but that's not very exciting. Maybe you like the current paint treatment because it adds some texture? Instead of paint, you could do that with drapes, rugs, etc.

For that living room, I'd reverse the paint- put your lighter color on bottom, and the color on top. Is that panelling or wainscoting on bottom? As it is, it sort of chops up the wall, and makes your ceiling look really low. I would do blinds in the living room as well, but you may not need them for light control or privacy.

Can you show more pics of the living room? It looks like there's more furniture to the right, and the couch is sort of floating over there by itself. Can you pull the chairs in closer to the couch?

Try swapping out the framed print over the TV for what's over the couch. What's there now looks a little small. Also try hanging your art a few inches lower. Do the animal skins have to stay, or are they there just to have something there?

Can you add a patterened quilt or throw over the back of the couch? Maybe add some patterened pillows? It looks kind of dark in there, so maybe a lamp on that small side table?

You can absolutely do this! Both rooms just need a little work and they can be great!

Oh, and that little cut out window in the foyer? Can you drywall over that? It seems odd to have a pass-through there. If it has to stay, I'm not sure I'd put anything on that little sill. You could always hang a piece of art on either side of it to make it disappear.

Hi miss trapper! Congrats on the babe coming! Nice home to raise your family in. I don't want to overwhelm you any further but I will toss some ideas out. I would take down all of the scarfs and put panels in the dining room. You could find a nice neutral paint and paint living and dining room the same color. Looking at the pic of the living room you could maybe go a shade darker but I would probably paint it all one color to unify it. I know maybe now is not the time, but have you ever thought about painting the dining room chairs/table? I will try to do some more pics for you to give you some ideas. Maybe some other members here will help with that too. Remember---they are just ideas---you are the one who lives there!

I for sure am going to go with one solid color; I was thinking something close to the kitchen but either darker or lighter. Panels in the future could be an option but to get nice ones those tend to be pricy and right now I want to spend more on a nice new floor and hopefully after that new trim. I like the trim we have but the previous owner didn't know how to tape right so every room has paint on the trim and it drives me insane.
I know when we put the new floor in we're going to put a rug under the table and probably somewhere in the living room too.
I guess the feeling I want for my house is warm and comfy. I think homes I see in magazines are beautiful but too overwhelming with material. I want peoples first reaction to be 'oh what a cute home'.

Here is another idea for the living room (all one color) I know it is the paint advice that you are looking for now but something to keep in mind for someday down the road. I think that the change in paint will make a big difference in your lovely home and the flooring will look great! You sound like you are on the right track!
