Polyurethene over Paint?

Are there any negative effects for painting polyurethane over semi-gloss paint? I am painting a window seat white. To protect it from cat and dog claws, I am thinking of also putting a few coats of poly over the finished paint. Am I creating any problems by doing so?

I did that to my kitchen cabinets, no problems after two years. I used a Polycrilic by Minwax.

Painted, stained and textured and added three coats of Polycrilic.

Claws will mar any surface. Poly will not protect it so it's a wasted effort.
