Is this green too intense? (pics)

My DD's bathroom. She is 12. I love the tiling but am wondering if I have picked a green that is too bright (BM Retro Lime)? Her cabinet will be white and her counter a grayish-green. This chandelier is supposed to add to the playful kitchy nature of the room. Her accent color will be orange to match the fruit in the chandelier: towels with green and orange grosgrain trim).

From Menlo Farmhouse

If I were to change the color, how do I make it a bit softer? I tried going more gray but she thought it was too "avocado" (see large chip on wall). The other greens were too sage-ish.

Thanks all you paint color people!

It is bright, but looks like it will really look great with the cute chandelier. How fun and energetic your towel colors and room will be. I like it!!!

I think the color is nice but I'm not sure such a food themed item belongs in the bathroom.

The Green looks nice. There is no color that is innately "wrong". It all has to do with how all the colors in the room go together. You don't even have the fixtures or cabinets in the room yet and then there will be towels and curtains too. This will bring it all together. Once the fixtures are in you won't be seeing a wall of green. It will be broken up. Your daughter likes the Green you have on the walls now so I would just keep it. It does go with the chandy theme.

While one poster has brought up the fact that food themed bathrooms are a no-no, the lemon theme on the chandy would be an exception to this 'rule'. Lemons are used in cleansing products for their clean citrus scent and cleaning ability and lemon decor in a bathroom is refreshing.

I love your ideas for the room with the lemon theme. I hope you keep us posted and let us see the final results. It sound like it is going to be a great bathroom.

    I love the color!

As far as a "food" theme....it beats the fish and beachy theme that drives me crazy! I've never understood why every other bathroom accessory out there has to have a sea shell or starfish on it! Now, if you were doing pizza, then I'd think that was strange!

Being that the bathroom is for a 12 year old, I think the color is perfect!

I love color and am a huge fan of bright happy greens. We have several different shades throughout our home. Although pretty on the screen, I have a feeling your green is pretty intense in person. One green that I've found to be very similar to what you have but maybe not quite as intense is Behr Grass Cloth. You could go a little lighter with a Celery or Kiwi color which look more limey. We used SW Celery in our bathroom and love it. We also used Behr Honeydew in our office. It's very similar to the color in your photos. It's bright & intense as well but fun. Here are some pics for a visual. The last one of honeydew is so you can see that intense can work too. (At least we like it :c) Sorry for the messes in the pics, we're rehabing a fixer upper and it was a mess when these were taken.

Grass Cloth - similar tones but more subdued:

Celery which is lighter & more airy but doesn't photo well in this room:

I like the green, too.... and I LOVE your tile selections. The nice beefy half wall goes so well with the large format shower tiles. I can't wait to see it all finished!

My only thought about the green is that it isn't the most flattering light to primp in. Our old house had a green half bath (Martha Stewart Hellebore, a pretty bright yellow-green) While I LOVED the color and the cheerful nature of the room (particularly in contrast to the rest of the house, which was neutral greys and creams) but I didn't love looking at myself in the mirror. But I wouldn't repaint it just based on that. The positives probably vastly outweigh that aspect.

    Here's my old powder room:

I painted my guest room bath the same green. It has white counters, cabinets, sink, toilet, tub and floor tile. Still don't have accessories - I need to start working on it. But I love the color - it makes me feel so good.

It had red wallpaper before - even the ceiling. At first I wasn't sure but it was neat.

I love the green!! So fresh & clean.

It looks good to me. I agree w/ others who have said it will not feel so strong once you get the room put back together, but I can also see how you might wish to soften or subdue the green a bit. One option might be to experiment on a sample board w/ mixing the green you have w/ a bit of white. I have used a measuring tablespoon before to try different proportions (i.e. 2:1 or 3:1 green to white, etc).

Like you, I found a green that I really liked (to use in my kitchen), but felt it would be too dark. Mixing that color 3:1 w/ white softened it perfectly.

Your dd's bathroom is going to look great--love that fun chandy!

LOL, check out my daughter's bedroom:

This is SW Lime Granita. I like this color, it's incredibly cheerful even on gray days. Bit out there, but if your daughter loves it (and her funky chandelier) why not?

I am ok with it, especially if you use some of the other colors (orange and white ) for accent. Seems teenage-friendly

My 12 year old son picked almost that exact color for his bedroom. In our case, it's Laura Ashley 'Apple.' Green is his favorite color. To make it look more masculine, I'll bring in a lot of black accents.

    I love it!!

I think it's wonderful! Hope you'll post pics when the room is all finished, as I'd love to see the final outcome! As for the comment above that the chandelier is a "food themed item" - ? I would never think of it that way. Lemons grow on trees ... it's a plant themed item!

    GREAT!

One thing to consider is that before too long she'll be applying makeup. I'm not sure if that bright of a green would alter the way you look in the mirror or not but it's something to think about.

I love it bright, and especially for a young teen. I think the avocado is too "old fashioned." (Apologies to any avocado fans!)

It's going to be a great, and happy, bathroom.

"It's only paint." You can repaint a more subdued tone once she's off to college. "Subdued" usually reads as dull and boring to young people, at least to the ones I know.

I love the light fixture, too.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful and insightful comments! I love these forums just for this reason--you bring to light issues I've never thought of and in this case, you surprised me with the number of positive responses.

Regarding makeup: Never thought of the green reflecting on skin. Good point! While she is just 12, you are right that the whole primping thing is around the corner. Good thing to keep in mind.

Paint: The flooring is greenish taupe and I thought that as she became more mature, we could move to the more neutral side of green--sage or greenish taupe. But, I thought I'd at least indulge this color whim and the recycled chandelier (original to the house when we bought it).

I think I might try softening the paint by adding small amounts of a lighter green just to take the edge off. There's only one coat on right now, so I could easily tone it down with the next coat.

Will definitely post pics when the bathroom is done!

    Thanks everyone!

i guess I'm late to see this...but i wouldn't change a thing. I love it. Of course, I'm painting my kitchen apple green so I like happy colors.
