Feedback on design/layout please....

So would appreciate any feedback on our layout/design. A few comments/notes: ceilings are 12ft. (soon to be coffered); micro currently in the island.

Angled the cabinet in the corner in order to balance the stove. Without the (larger) angle the cabinets on the side of the stove were off balance. Any other thoughts that keep it balanced?

Currently cherry wood cabinets lighter stained with a dark brown glaze. Thinking about doing the island in a dark brown stain, perhaps slightly distressed.

And the island, although it has the columns, will most likely not "bump out" the granite as the pic shows; will keep the lines smooth; corner rounded.

Appreciate any thoughts or feedback....

I would eliminate the diagonal cuts in the corner/do a 90 degree turn and go ahead and center the range on that wall. Seriously, the range is dwarfed by the other chunky elements[pantry/fridge/lgisland/glasstop tall cabs/highly designed window] so the size of cabs flanking it is not a big issue.....the cabs protruding out on the diag impede the corner being used efficientrly-the "symmetry" you alluded to is unclear, but a 90 degree turn would be better. The tiny cabs left and right of hood are questionable usefulness anyway. What is your design idea with the window-I'd do a dbl casement with a rectangular transome running across the top if you want something different-not sure I like what is pictured....The island is very large in relation to the space, unless this is all open to a very grand room....unclear of the context is what I'm saying.

I agree with changing the angled cabinets to 90 degrees and centering the range. The overall flow in the kitchen is great. Does it open to a room with more windows? The cabinets on either side of the existing window appear to "overwhelm" it. With the dark stain it may make it feel enclosed.

The finished end panels are very nice and add a classic look to the space. Good luck with your project!

The kitchen is open floor plan and flows into the family/great room and dining area. Lot's of light with sliding doors and window in dining area and wall of windows and sky lights in family room.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I agree with the comments to center the range. However, with your very tall ceilings and cabinets, plus the paneled fridge and range, you may want to consider going with a 36" range instead of a 30". It seems to be called for in a kitchen of this caliber and the 30" range looks kind of lost as is.

You could then also go 6" wider on the range hood (42") to, again, give the range a bit more presence. It's also recommended for better capture.

You could also separate the cooktop/ovens-use island to house oven and get just the right cooktop with hood on the wall.

I'm assuming because of the handles that the pantry is to the left of the sink and the fridge is to the right. That needs to be swapped at minimum because of workflow issues. The fridge needs to be to the left of the sink. I'm not so sure I'd panel it either. The kitchen is a bit small square footage-wise to have that much going on overhead and paneling the fridge only adds to the vertical oppressiveness of using the way tall cabinetry.

The kitchen needs to be opened up a bit visually from the "tall enclosing arms" look that it has. I'd look at doing a separate walk in pantry elsewhere and totally eliminating the pantry personally. That would give you more room to do a real sized range to go with the upsized cabinetry that you have. Having a large range as a focal point would balance the weight of the uppers with heaver visual weight lower down. If you don't have room to put the pantry elsewhere, look at doing shallow pantries in the breakfast area or other adjacent room like the laundry area.

I'd also put a prep sink on the island on the end towards the range. It's a good thing you are eliminating the fussy bumpouts! More streamlined would be better. I would think about choosing a color for your island instead of more wood. Give it an additional presence and weight. Barn red? Green-gray? Steel-blue? Ocean teal?

I agree that the fridge and pantry should be switched.

I would eliminate the 45-degree cabinets.

How big is this island? Can you reach the center of this for cleaning? How is the out facing corner of the granite supported?

I agree with everything that Holly just wrote...only she put it better than I would have :)

Pal is right about the island, too...if it's too big it will be difficult to keep clean. And, the prep sink will be great!

Island is 5 x 6, so don't believe there will be issues in cleaning it. It's supported by some built in panels, which will have some access for storage.

it is very dark and heavy looking. good points made above on fridge/pantry cabs. not paneling the fridge.

one of those open hoods a few inches wider than the stove with space on either side would look better.

centering the stove would be a better plan than the diagonal corner - which is another thing that takes away from an open feel in the space.

the window looks dwarfed. Is there a view out of it? I don't care for grids - they block views and in this case make things look even more enclosed. have you thought about just the grid on the upper arched area and keeping the lower part of the window clear? It also looks very short with the cabs towering on either side of it.

I wouldn't be able to reach the center area of an island 5' wide. I have trouble reaching into the 'peak' of a corner area. I'm only 5' tho and probably have short arms. Your island is edging close to a square and adds to the heavy, boxy look tho.
