How would this look?

I am leaning towards ordering these drapes for my living room from Country Curtains (they make me feel cheerful!):

These pics are a bit old, and currently my couch is in front of the windows on the front of the house, instead of where you see it in the photo.

My current drapes aren't very wide - Each panel is around 40", maybe a bit less than that even, and I only have one panel hanging on each side of the windows. The Country Curtains drapes are 51" wide. I would use one checked panel on each side of the double window in front (which you can partially see in this pic):

- but I'm not sure what to do about these windows on either side of the fireplace:

Could I get by with hanging one checked panel on the single windows flanking the fireplace and use tie-backs (securing them on the side of the adjoining walls)? I'm thinking that two panels hanging straight on the single windows (as they are currently configured) in the checked pattern might really overwhelm. The single windows (not including mouldings) are around 32" in width. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I feel awkward responding to this post in an, "I should be bowing down to you, not giving you my worthless opinion" kind of way! FOr what it's worth, with the pics that you posted, I'm savoring the red floral ones. There's something very comfortable about them (for me, which says something, because I don't like red).

And -- I have two narrow windows in my bedroom, much like your LR ones. I've tried regular panel pairs and there's just too much fabric. So I tried extending the rods out (which I normally do), but the windows are 1) close to corners and 2) close to a furniture spot so I could only go so far. Right now the windows have just blinds :( but as soon as I can find some inspiration I am going to try single panels. I may even try them hung on "knobs" that span the entire window, instead of rods.

IME Lowe's and HD don't carry anything over 84". At least the ones near me don't.

The only retail stores where I've found 90+" curtains are Target (my local store carries 96" and you can get more selection online, and Tuesday Morning/Marshall's/TJ Maxx hit or miss.

I really appreciate the honest opinions and suggestions! I don't really see anything that rings my chimes on Ikea's website, but I wonder if they would have more of a selection in-store?

Does anyone care for these? I am drawn to them ... They too make me feel cheery (although maybe not "summer day picnic cheery" like the red & white checks do). I hadn't considered blue checks. Hmmmm. I'm not sure why I feel so locked in to my reds, and I am going to try to consider all options!

Penneys had something similar IIRC- I was there yesterday looking for other plaid drapes that would look great in your room but I couldn't find them. My son has them in his room; will have to grab the package to get the name.

    Thank you roselvr! :-)

i don't think i would like the shade of green that are in the plaid drapes above in your rooms...

only thing that i saw when i BRIEFLY looked online was something called redford taffeta on halfprice drapes...though that is taffeta-like material-- don't think that would be the feel/look you'd want, but the pattern/color seemed nice...

Honestly, I still keep coming back to these:

-as Photoshopped into my room by the talented Moonshadow:

They are (of course!) the most "spendy" option and there are a number of things I actually need more than $460 worth of four curtain panels. But out of all the things I've seen so far, these just really call to me. I think I tried to convince myself to go with the red checks because they were a less expensive option - when the floral really does scream my name.

    Gosh, I'm a wishy-washy waffler, aren't I?

Hey, Jen, I missed this thread. If you want to see something PSd that I was working on for you, give me a holler. I'm doing taxes but welcome the breaks. (If I can't manage time to play, I'll let you know, maybe someone else could fill in. ;)

Anyway, some more quick doodles for you to look at (all of them still in your PB album if you want to view that way). Dropped brightness & contrast on the red, but it still might be a bit more stark than IRL.

Just my .02, must admit, I like the red with your furnishings (especially the floral chair!). But like the multi plaid w/your wall paint.

    Red check no valance #1

    Red check no valance #2

    Red check w/valance #1

    Red check w/valance #2

    Multi plaid #1

    Multi plaid #2

Moon, you are amazing! Thank you so very much! That helps me to visualize everything tremendously!

OK, so ... can I get a vote?

    #1 - red checks:

    #2 - multi plaid:

    #3 - red floral:

I definitely know my leaning now, but want to know what others think.

out of those 3, definitely the floral...!!

the multiplaid looks ok in the living room, but don't think it would look good at all in the dining room, with the dr wall color...

    FLoral! #3

Thanks busybee3! Actually at this point I am only going to replace the living room drapes. The pair in the DR will remain.

I love the multi plaid with the room, it doesn't scream at you lol.

    I would choose #3.

Multiplaid floral, though that isn't what I would have thought before I saw the photos...

Oh, the floral, it looks perfect to me (and my decorating style is quite different from yours, auntjen, I don't have your talent for combining patterns and colors. But I cast a strong vote for the florals! They're great in your beautiful room.

I adore the red floral!! Although, I just used a very similar fabric as an accent in one of my rooms, so I'm biased. But I still love it!

As a second choice, I vote for the red check.

Thank you & you're very welcome Jen. Know all too well the agony of not having a visual.
I'll do a comparison of the 3 above using the same room view (the floral picture. Might be easier for voting. ;)
    Back in a bit...

Well, since I'm the one who suggested red and white buffalo check, you KNOW I just love it!!! I'm so jealous!

No valance though. Maybe later if you think you need them.

Those color and checks will go with everything in your house.

I'm seriously thinking about taking down my new and expensive wallpaper in the DR just to put those curtains in there and the kitchen. lol

Hi Jen! I always enjoy looking at pictures of your home!

I really, really like the red floral but I also like the red/white check as a close second.

Really love all the inspiration photos posted above too.

I like the red floral best, but...I would really like to see a large black and white buffalo check.

Jen, I don't think I said it was too country, I'm the one who said it would work.

The thing about checks in any size or color, is the pattern isn't busy or loud, even though they're checkered. Does that make sense? lol

I find any checkered pattern to be airy and cheerful, and can fit most decor's. Especially your's!

The multi plaid is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! and cheery!

The floral strikes me as dour.....moody. The color is kinda of dusky...

When you first posted I thought the floral would be too much but seeing in PhotoShop I like it best of the 3. If it sings to you and doesn't put off something important like food, mortgage I say go for it.

Ohhhh, the red floral! I love red!

    OK, for voting:

    Floral

    Multi plaid

    Red check

    Black check for Bumble

The floral is my favorite in your room.

My vote is for the floral. Love it.

red floral #1, red check #2~~~

Another vote for floral, followed by the multi-check.

    Floral is perfect

    #1 - multi check
    #2 - red floral (a very, very close 2nd)
#3 - red check (a very distant 3rd, don't really like them in your room with your wall color)

Have not read entire thread so do not know if you are still contemplating red check curtains but if so I love them and they are an unexpected, brilliant choice for your room. Would def use the same panels for windows flanking fireplace. If they don't have to close for privacy, how about buying one set of panels and cutting them in half longwise so that one set of curtains will dress both windows? Then they will not be so full as to overwhelm your windows.

Thank you for indulging me moonflower. But I like the floral best!

Thank you all so much for helping me to reach a decision. I just ordered the floral, and can hardly wait til they arrive!

By the way, I'm loving that matched pair of kittehs on the couch!! The back of our couch has a similar look.

I like #1 (Checks) looks more relaxed & fun but I also like # 3 (floral) looks more formal or a richer look to the room. Guess it depends on what look you are going after. It sure it great to have them photo shopped in, I had no idea I would like the look of the checks in there at all. #2 (plaid) looks nice also especially in the last photoshop post. Just my 2 cents...I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices! Terri

I was just going to vote for the floral - definitely! - but then I read that you already ordered them. They look perfect in the photoshopped picture and really work with your wall color and leather furniture.

I love me some gingham and buffalo checks and like the red against your walls but to me it looked too "country" for your space. The plaid was very nice but blended into the walls. The floral is just right!

Isn't Photoshop great? (Note to self: learn how to use my already installed Photoshop).

auntjen - I definitely vote for the red floral. If I remember your other post correctly, you wanted to bring in some British influence and the red floral is it. I lived there for 4 years back in the early 60s, and they were and probably still are, very flower oriented indoors and out, probably because the weather is often so horrible!

For me it was a toss up: floral or multi plaid. Either goes well, imho. But since a specific look & feel is the goal here, floral fits better. And floral being one of your earliest choices Jen, so often when we keep returning to an early pick it's what works.

Would love to see a photo of them when they arrive!

Hi auntjen - I'm a very infrequent poster here; I'm more of a "decorating for dummies" type than talented as so many are here!

I wanted to tell you that I love your home and think you've made a great choice. In fact, I'm ordering a swatch of the floral which you chose and also would like a swatch of the multi-plaid. But I'm not sure that I'm seeing it in the online catalog. Is is "Moire Plaid Rod Pocket"? The pics that you posted don't really look like moire to me, but it's hard to tell. I want to make sure I order the right thing. If it's not Moire Plaid (that comes in 4 different colors), would you kindly point me to the right name?

    Many thanks -

    Suzieque

Hi Suzieque - Yes, that is the correct name. You have the same thoughts that I did when I saw that the plaid was called "moire!" It didn't look the way I remember moire looking either, and I wondered if it might have too much of a silky/shiny look for my space. On the site it looks like a lovely fabric though, so let us know what it looks like in person when you receive your swatch, will you?

Thank you again for all of the kind words and helpful comments! I feel slightly guilty for spending the $ on (unnecessary) drapes when what we really needed next was work done on the exterior of the house, but sometimes a girl's just gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
    ;-)

You made an excellent choice. The floral will be perfect in your space!

I vote for the floral as well....and just LOVE the cats!!!

Oh yay! I was surprised how much I loved the red floral in your room! I saw the white of the red check as much too bright. Love your choice! Moonshadow, you are amazinbg and generous!!

Thank you, auntjen! I'll let you know what I think of the moire.

I vote for the floral as well....and just LOVE the cats!!!

lol, I forgot to mention, the cats made me think of mine, how they get all cozy somewhere and hang their Do Not Disturb sign. Every time I clicked around a cat's head & ears, I could just hear them saying ..."What, you again?"

    ;D

    (and thank you, leahcate :)

Thanks, auntjen. I've ordered swatches of three of the plaids and also the floral. My wall color is very much the same as yours, by the way, and I have a similar rug. So far - that's ALL that even resembles your lovely home. Oh - except for the cats; I have those, too (and they're my favorite part of my home :-) )

I love the floral and I love your style! Arts & Crafts, Southwestern, and more! I've tried to pull this look together for years but just have been able to do it. Would love to see other rooms in your house - is your bedroom posted? Thanks for sharing!!!

    Gosh.
It's a shame you're not going black and white.
I have these in tab top from JCPenny's. They're 100% cotton and only one panel (I think I have 4) has been used.

The red looks great with your colors!
