Rug size?

Hi everyone! We have a rather small living room - 12x18. We are looking for an area rug and I'm wondering what size to go for. I want the furniture to sit on it. Is a 9x12 too big? What are the rules with respect to area rugs? Thanks for any help you can offer!

I think that you want at least 2 feet or so of floor to show around the rug so a 9X12 should work for your room. If you want the furniture to sit entirely on the rug then you probably can't go any smaller than 9X12 anyhow. :-)
