From the picture it looks like you have black counter tops. Since your concept is modern, a stainless steel would be a nice option, and would allow you free range with color in the other areas of the room. I agree with Natalie that a mosaic would be a great choice as well. Below are some fun, modern options!

Green glass could bring the vibe your looking for here. Keep it light and lively, but ensure it doesn't look cheap. Select good materials.

What is your favorite color? Find it in a high shine or glass tile. Can be large or small tiles. Can also be a solid surface almost "plexiglass" like as shown above. Attaching some pictures to show what I mean. To add a little warmth select a more stone like finish.
