Wilsonart Laminate Help Needed!

My husband and I own an older model trailer (circa 1982ish - ugly brown particle board cabinets, dark brown wall paneling, etc.). I am a full time student and work part time, my husband is a contractor. We have discussed in length and have decided, that for now we would be staying here, keeping our overall expenses pretty darn low instead of moving. This is not a 10 yr investment however it will probably be at least 2 years before we move out into a house and at that time rent out this place.

Since my husband and I agreed that we would be living here awhile longer we have decide to remodel the kitchen as phase one of several remodeling projects. I have found our tile ridiculously cheap, purchased our paint and found our Pergo flooring ridiculously cheap as well. We are going to be doing all of the work and a ton of DIY projects such as building our own cabinets for the kitchen and making and installing laminate countertops so that I can get an undermount sink.

I am to the point of picking out the laminate. My over all look is white shaker cabinets with a dark almost black - black counter top. I love the combination!

1. Can anyone tell me if they have the following laminate,
2. how long you have had it, and
3. how has it held up?
4. Which one of these below do you like best?
I have three ea. Wilsonart Standard, Premium, and HD styles that I am interested in. I just down know if the HD is truly worth spending the money on or not.

Wilsonart Laminate
Standard:
Rustic Slate
Oiled Soapstone
Graphite Nebula

Premium:
Black Alicante
Ebony Star
Bahia Granite

HD:
Ebony Eclipse
Luna Night
Raven Gemstone

Get the cheapest matte finish in a black pattern that you can find. Skip any of the gloss or textured finishes, especially that way too gloss Blackstar. It shows everything and is just way too fakey. Laminate is only a budget choice if you stay away from the specialty edges and finishes.

Also, be very very careful about the amount of weight you are adding. Trailer walls are not 2x4 and cannot support heavier objects attached to them. The same goes for the flooring. You don't have a conventional foundation supporting things, and you WILL have too much deflection for any type of tile without rebuilding the trailer entirely. It will just crack on you. You need some type of vinyl or other resillient flooring, not tile.

The ONLY method that will actually work over time to have laminate with an undermount sink is the Counterseal method. It takes a Corian ring and mounts the sink to it, and then glues that to the laminate. Even that can fail if you don't have an expert well versed in the proper steps doing the job. It's also pretty expensive. There is no other method that any professional will put in their own ome. The Karran sinks, well, the ONE fabricator that I knew that tried that won't do them anymore due to to many issues with them. If you have a laminayte counter, the absolute best tried and true choice is a drop in sink. Period. Unless you want to replace the counters again when you move out and want to rent this place. It's a waste of time and effort.

    hollysprings makes excellent points!

That said, I would have agreed with a drop-in sink without hearing her advice.

Of all the choices above, I love the very first one best of all and feel it would go well on light cabinets. The pattern in the granite picks up the pattern in the dark pieces of tile.

Did you just photoshop those samples together or is there some form of kitchen design magic of which I know nothing?

PS: I'm in Canada, but at my Lowe's store, you can get a D-wrap edge that looks more like the granite edge at no extra cost and you don't have to get the little backsplash at the back if you don't want to, so you can tile right to the countertop. I imagine you're buying the sheet and wrapping it yourself, but thought I'd throw that out there. :)

I like the first and second choices best. I'm not a fan of the HD laminates--they always look a bit pixillated to me.

I have gotten the 8 x 10 samples from Wilsonart on the above pictures (plus a whole lot more!) I narrowed it down to these so far. I agree with the gloss - couldn't stand it. All I saw were finger prints on the sample, and then tested it with a knife the results were not good.

In regards to weight - we aren't adding any real additional weight than what we already have. The cabinets will be a little bit heavier but we are not putting stone countertops in. Laminate wood flooring by pergo is not as heavy as hardwood not to mention the entire house has had the floors replace so we are good there.

As far as the countertop and the undermount sink. I actually know of several people who have done it, and have seen it done online. We are purchasing the laminate but it will not be place over particle board rather solid board. Karran makes undermount sinks especially for laminate countertops - the Beveledge.com diy video is great! If you use Marine epoxy it gives you an even tighter seal - luckily I live on a peninsula so there is no shortage in being able to obtain it here!

I loved the Oiled Soapstone on the small sample chip I had but when I got the 8 x 10, it seems a lot lighter than the rest of the options. With that being said my husband this morning when presented with the choices picked his top 3: Oiled Soapstone, Raven Gemstone, and Luna Night. The only thing holding me back at this point on the Laminate Soapstone is my knife test on it when compared to the other two.

It's a really touch decision. I don't want to spend a fortune however I don't want to skimp so badly that the quality is lost and I have to replace the countertop in 6mo to a years time. Oh I did forget to mention that Lowe's and HD both carry these. Lowes is more expensive but they will match the HD price plus give an extra 10% off! Just thought I would pass on that little deal saver :)

Magnum. Hi, I'm just wondering what finish you went with in the black Alicante counter. I was trying to order it in a vintage finish. Apparently it will cost a lot more.
