Do we need curtains?

Are there guidelines for determining if a window actually NEEDS curtains? We have a new, small ensuite bathroom. The window is on the second floor and the only people who would be able to look in would be standing 400' away on the sidewalk across the street. I'm tempted to leave the window uncovered or very minimally covered to allow as much south sunshine in, but I'd hate anyone to see me naked. Thoughts?

It's a personal choice really I think. We have a similar situation, our neighbors are about .5 acre from us, we're on the second floor and have a nice window. I love opening the windows and letting the light in during the day. With natural lighting I know I have privacy, but I know that at night, I can see in their house and would assume they could see in ours. So after dark, I wouldn't feel comfortable using the lights without any window coverings.

We got some nice shutter styled blinds and I'm eventually going to put a valance up. There are a lot of options out there and I would do something so at least it's there when you feel it's needed.

"...at night, I can see in their house and would assume they could see in ours."

Excellent point. I'll see what I can see after dark.

Have you considered a half curtain (tea curtain, cafe curtain).

We have ten windows on the back of the house with no window treatments. That area goes out to a covered patio and beyond that is a large secluded yard. The only other rooms to the back with drapes are two bedrooms and a bath.
If I chose to use window treatments it would just be for decoration and I would rather have the light.

I would turn on the light in the room and go out into the street and check the sight lines. Personally, I would cover the window.

You can buy a shade that opens from the top down. I'm sure you can get it in a sheer fabric that would let in the light but make it impossible for someone to actually see through it.

My daughter and her ex-husband had a similar set up as jterrilynn with the windows and secluded backyard. They have a basement so the house is higher up in the back and they liked the openness and natural light. Well the yard wasn't as secluded as they believed because it was broken into one day while they were running errands. The police said they came in from the back and it was most likely because they could see what my daughter and SIL were doing from way back in the yard. Obviously they had been watching and who knows for how long. It always gave me the ibby jeebies to be there, I felt like a fish in a fish bowl. (sorry jterrilynn)

The closet house to me is a half mile away. If I left any blinds open at night, it would give me the creeps.

When I had my first apartment I had a half curtain in the bathroom. I bathed in the dark.

I've watched too many scary movies. lol

Yikes lukk! Glad I have a great big rottie and fencing as a deterrent. I do know it could happen though, my neighbor behind me was broken into through the back in the middle of the day when I was home. I didn't see a thing because of the bushes and trees.

I have a Pit Bull... but I think I'll get curtains because the dog would likely just watch while someone watched me get in and out of the tub. aa62579, thanks for the pics.

I am all for no window treatments except for decorative reasons, if possible. My 132" bow window in the LR only has a top valance. The kitchen window has a valance, the upstairs bath has nothing. I hate feeling closed in, and the only reason our bedroom has blinds is for blocking light when I get a chance to sleep in once in a while!

I would have your DH stand in the bathroom window, with a light on at night and during the day, and you go out and see what you can see. I think the angle alone will save you.

I'd always want window coverings in a bathroom and bedroom, just gives me peace of mind.

thanks for not taking my post the wrong way jterrilyn, I wish they had had a dog, it may have at least kept the bad guys out of their house, but still...the idea of someone watching them is creepy to me.

The even scarier part, they were only gone about 10 minutes at most and the Police said that from what they could tell, the bad guys were probably still in the house when they pulled back into their garage.

I was so thrilled to have this beautiful view out the back of my new house from the gorgeous window over the tub in the master bath. Then DH decided to put my MIL's wheelchair ramp right THERE!!! She is still walking, albeit very slowly, and stops ALOT, sssoooo, guess I am putting a cutain on the window......

One bathroom has no window treatment. We have privacy in the back yard, so it's not needed. The other bath has a cafe curtain. Provides privacy and allows plenty of natural light at the same time.

I have a roller blind on my bathroom...I put it up during the day and pull it down at night...best of both worlds. I have a short sheer curtain on each side with a decorative tassel on it. Love that bright South sun.
