24' Deep Upper Cabinets anyone?

Part of my plan may consist of having 24" deep upper cabinets? Does anyone have experience having deep uppers like this? I am not sure what I'll think of this storage. I am thinking without some sort of pull out or other deal, this space will be dead non usable space

If any of you have experiences with deep cabinetry, let me know your experiences and if you have found any great ways to make use of this space.

Are you talking about 24" deep uppers over a countertop? If so, then your countertop is going to have to be extraordinarily deep in order for you to have use of it -- like 36" at least. And I'm not sure how you would be able to easily access what would be kept in a 24" upper.

I only have one upper in my kitchen and it is the over fridge cabinet, which happens to be 24" deep. It is flush with the front of the fridge, but I can still only easily reach the items at the front. Many people use this space for vertical tray and pan storage, and that is probably the best use of such space. Yours would be set back from the countertop, so even more difficult to reach.

I don't kow that any of the pull-outs or gizmos ordinarily used in base cabinets or full-height pantries would work well for you, given that you would still have to be able to reach to grab the top of most things.

In a word: don't. Since base cabinets are also 24" deep, standing at a counter with deep uppers and standard bases would be very uncomfortable. Not only will you bump your head constantly, but you won't be able to see the countertop in front of you without backing up or stooping. 12" is the standard for a reason, though in some instances you can get away with 14" or 16" uppers. The ONLY way that 24" uppers would work is if it was a continuous cabinet without a counter, like a pantry cabinet.

Where do you plan to have these deeper cabinets, in your kitchen? Is it the area, over by the fridge?

Also, did you see my posts, from yesterday? Don't know if they interest you, but hopefully, it might give you some ideas :)

    Hi Lavender Lass,
I did see your post from yesterday. I like the ideas but the problem is all of the movement - basically that switches my kitchen and dining area and hubby said no to that. Since he's doing the work for me...I'm just going to work with the kitchen on the side it is now...

As to the 24's, Yes, one is over the fridge and I've reached those in the store and I don't like the height. But, when I removed my spice column from my mantle, KD popped out the cabinets next to my stove to 24 (have to double check that), She said she did it so that it would support the hood. I'm thinking now, that I may need to go back to the columns which I think start at 24" at the top but then reduce to 15" for the spice pull outs. Maybe if I put that back in, I'll make my stove have the look I like again, and I can get rid of the huge hulking boxes she put in there. I am 5' 2" and I don't think that will work for me. I also don't want to lose the use of the cabinets.

I'm also reading discussions on 30" deep cabinets for lowers and that could help a bit in my distances between Zones that is a fault of my kitchen, (ie if I do 30" deep cabinets on all walls, I will make the distance to stove 5' 4" rather than 6' 4" it is now), but then you have 18" deep upppers not 24" deep uppers. All my air space is gone with 24" uppers. I think that I need to change all of that in the plan. She also pulled out one by the fridge to 24 - heck I think just for looks. I think while 'cool' that isn't appropriate for my kitchen which is vintage not modern, and especially not with me since I'm short.

So now, with the columns back in, I lose 9" of counter by my stove again... Unless I off set the stove and put a larger counter next to it. Boy there certainly is alot to think about. The sale on cabinets where I can save $6000 and get a free kitchen base is until the 31st of March. I need to make my mind up or I will lose all that savings!

Hello, did you do your upper cabinets at 24”? I’m thinking about that too? We want to use it as a pantry.
